INDIANAPOLIS –- The two seeded Grand Valley State softball team defeated the one seed Indianapolis 4-3 to advance to the Division II College World Series for the sixth time in program history. The Lakers improve to 45-6 and win the Midwest Super Regional round 2-0 to advance to the World Series beginning next week Thursday (May 25) in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
Indianapolis jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the top of the second inning to go up 2-0. The Greyhounds led off the inning with a walk and next at bat launched a two-run home run to left field. Indianapolis added to the lead with a solo home run in the fourth inning to go up 3-0.
The Lakers answered in the bottom of the fourth inning with four runs to take a 4-3 lead. Hannah Hollister got things started with a leadoff infield single. Two batters later, Kelsey Komorous hit a double to left field that scored Hollister from first to put the Lakers on the board. Megan Koenigshof and Kaitlin Lynch hit back-to-back singles to load the bases with one out. Next batter, Joanna Cirrincione walked to bring the Lakers within one and Morgan Wagner walked next at bat to tie the game. With two outs in the inning, Eliana Eiland put the Lakers ahead 4-3 with an infield single to the shortstop to score Cirrincione.
Hannah Beatus was dominant once again in the circle as the Lakers would hold off the Greyhounds in the final three innings to secure the 4-3 win. Beatus tossed all seven innings allowing three runs off four hits with six strikeouts to improve to 27-1 in one in the circle this season.
Kelsey Komorous led the Lakers going 2-3 with a double and RBI. Eliana Eiland went 1-3 with the game-winning RBI. Hannah Hollister batted 1-3 with a run scored, while Lydia Goble hit 1-3 with a walk. Kaitlin Lynch notched a hit and run scored, and Megan Koenigshof added a hit. Joann Cirrincione and Morgan Wagner each notched an RBI.
