Northern Michigan's Soulas, GVSU's Mikalauskas Named GLIAC Swimmers of Week

BAY CITY, Mich. -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its fourth weekly awards for the swimming and diving season. Northern Michigan freshman Lena Soulas earned GLIAC Female Athlete of the Week accolades, while Grand Valley State junior Marius Mikalauskas captured GLIAC Male Athlete of the Week honors.


FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Lena Soulas, Northern Michigan

Northern Michigan's Lena Soulas posted four individual victories over the weekend.  In Saturday’s meet at Grand Valley State University, she captured the 50-yard freestyle in 24.52. She then posted one of the nation’s top times in the 100-yard freestyle, clocking in at 52.34 to win the race. Against Saginaw Valley State University Sunday, she took the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:52.79, which qualified her for an NCAA B-Cut and is currently the sixth fastest time in the country. She also repeated with victory in the 100-yard freestyle, posting a top time of 52.54. Her weekend included assisting the 200-yard medley relay team to victory Saturday as well as the 400-yard freestyle relay Sunday.


MALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Marius Mikalauskas, Grand Valley State

Grand Valley State junior Marius Mikalauskas tallied the best time in division II swimming, hit the NCAA B mark and broke his own school record with a first-place finish in a time of 1:59.82 in the 200 breaststroke. The previous pool record, which Marius held, was 2:01.87. Mikalauskas also touched second in the 100 breast (57.20) and was a part of the GVSU 200 medley team that finished first in 1:32.51.
