GVSU's Goebel & Bartels Tabbed GLIAC Swimming Athletes of the Week

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its weekly awards for the swimming and diving season. Grand Valley State sophomore Melina Goebel earned GLIAC Female Athlete of the Week accolades, while Grand Valley State freshman Moritz Bartels captured GLIAC Male Athlete of the Week honors.


FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Melina Goebel, Grand Valley State

Grand Valley State sophomore Melina Goebel (Offenbach, Germany) recorded three first-place finishes and a second as the Lakers claimed a 159-141 GLIAC dual meet win over Wayne State. Goebel won the 500 free (5:10.50), 1000 free (10:35.83) and was a part of the 400 free relay team that hit the wall first in 3:34.65. Goebel also finished second in the 200 fly (2:11.15). Melina added three second place finishes and a third in a double dual versus Nova Southeastern and William Jewell during a winter training break in Florida. She finished second in the 200 fly (2:09.73), 500 free (5:07.43) and was a part of the 400 free relay team that touched the wall in 3:38.04, followed by a third-place finish in the 100 free (53.86).


MALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Moritz Bartels, Grand Valley State

Grand Valley State freshman Moritz Bartels (Zueibruecken, Germany) tallied first place finishes in the 1000 free (9:45.12) and 500 free (4:45.93) in the Lakers’ 178-118 GLIAC dual meet win over Wayne State. Moritiz added a second in the 1000 free (9:39.39) and a fourth in the 500 free (4:43.58) in a double dual versus versus Nova Southeastern and William Jewell during a winter training break in Florida.
