GVSU's Goebel and WSU's Drobnych claim Week 11 swimming and diving honors

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced the 11th weekly awards of the 2018-19 swimming and diving season. Grand Valley State junior Melina Goebel was named GLIAC Women's Athlete of the Week, while Wayne State senior Dima drobnych captured GLIAC Men's Athlete of the Week honors.


FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Melina Goebel - Grand Valley State

Junior Melina Goebel (Offenbach, Germany) notched three wins to help lead the No. 11 Lakers to a 200-105 victory over No. 4 Indianapolis. She won the 1,000 freestyle in 10:22.02, took the 200 butterfly in 2:08.70 and placed first in the 500 freestyle in 5:07.90.


MALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Dima Drobnych - Wayne State

Senior Dima Drobnych (Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine) swept the 50 and 100 backstroke events with times of :23.04 and :48.32 during his final home meet Friday. He set pool records in the 100 and 200 backstroke (1:47.85). He also led off the Warriors' winning 400 medley relay, which clocked a pool record of 3:18.36. WSU defeated Findlay, 171-103.
