WSU's Palazzo wins NCAA 100 breaststroke title

INDIANAPOLIS – Wayne State junior Sasha Palazzo won the men's 100-yard breaststroke Friday at the 2019 NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships held at the IUPUI Natatorium.

Palazzo finished in :52.24, breaking his own Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference record of :52.26. He is the Warriors' first NCAA individual champion since 2013.

Grand Valley State's Harry Shalamon also broke his own GLIAC record in the 100 backstroke. He placed third in :46.59, beating his former mark of :46.82. WSU's Dima Drobnych was fourth in :47.04, and Northern Michigan's Renars Bundzis placed sixth in :47.17.

NMU's Rachel Helm finished sixth in the women's 100 backstroke in :54.41. GVSU's Melina Goebel was eighth in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:54.68.

Heading into Saturday's final day of competition, the Wayne State men's team is fourth in the team standings with 174.5 points, while Grand Valley is fifth (170) and Northern Michigan 19th (52.5).

In the women's standings, WSU is 12th (113), GVSU 13th (100) and NMU 16th (55).

Queens College leads the men's and women's team standings.
