GV's Shalamon wins NCAA men's 200 backstroke

INDIANAPOLIS – The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference crowned a second individual champion at the 2019 NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships, which concluded Saturday at the IUPUI Natatorium.

Grand Valley State's Harry Shalamon won the men's 200 backstroke in a GLIAC record time of 1:42.46, beating his former mark of 1:43.38. The GLIAC was well-represented in the 200 backstroke finals as Northern Michigan's Renars Bundzis placed fourth (1:43.91) and Wayne State's Dima Drobnych was seventh (1:45.07).

NMU's Rachel Helm also broke her own record in the women's 200 backstroke by placing third with a time of 1:55.79. She bettered her former mark of 1:56.21. Teammate Savanna Saunders finished sixth (1:59.73).

Wayne State's Amanda Hurchalla totaled 506.80 points to finish second in the women's 3-meter diving. The Warriors' Mia Teifer was third with 496.50 points, while Grand Valley's Mikayla Karasek was fifth (461.75).

GVSU's Marius Mikalauskas was third in the men's 200 breaststroke (1:56.80), while Wayne State's Joao Ribeiro was eighth (2:00.65). GVSU's Celia Hoag finished sixth in the women's 200 breaststroke in 2:15.36.

Melina Goebel of GVSU finished fourth in the women's 1,650 freestyle with a time of 16:38.98, and WSU's Ellie Dean was seventh (16:53.43).

The Wayne State men's 400 freestyle relay team of Ryan Katulski, Rasmus Olsen, Stewart Nowinski and Franz Mueller took third in 2:56.83.

Queens College swept the men's and women's team titles, scoring 606 and 707.5 points, respectively.

The Wayne State men's team finished fourth with 238.5 points, while Grand Valley was fifth (222), Northern Michigan 18th (65) and St. Cloud State 26th (17).

The WSU women's team placed eighth with 178 points. GVSU was 11th (152), NMU 14th (99) and Saginaw Valley State 44th (2).
