GVSU's Goodyear, and NMU's Helm Claim GLIAC Swimming Athlete of the Week Honors

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced the second weekly awards of the 2019 swimming and diving season. Grand Valley St.  sophomore  Jesse Goodyear earned GLIAC Male Athlete of the Week accolades, while Northern Michigan Senior Rachel Helm captured GLIAC Female Athlete of the Week honors.


MALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Jesse Goodyear - Grand Valley St.

Grand Valley State sophomore Jesse Goodyear was named the GLIAC Swimmer of the Week it was announced by the league office. Goodyear finished first in the 1000 (9:33.76) and 500 freestyle (4:44.78) as the Lakers claimed a 161-64 victory over D1 foe Milwaukee. In addition to Goodyear earning GLIAC honors this week, the GLIAC announced junior Moritz Bartels was the recipient for GLIAC Swimmer of the Week honor the previous week for his first-place performance in the CSCAA Open Water Nationals. Bartels finished first in the 5K swim with a time of :58.45, helping the Lakers take the CSCAA Open Water Collegiate Championships with a team score of 22. 


FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Rachel Helm - Northern Michigan

 Senior Rachel Helm (Newcastle, England) has been named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Swim & Dive Athlete of the Week. Helm won all eight races she competed in this past weekend against the University of Findlay on Friday and Saturday. On Friday, the senior was a member of the 125-yard medley relay and 125-yard freestyle relay. She then also captured two individual races, winning the 25-yard backstroke and the 75-yard backstroke. She followed with four more wins Saturday, starting with the 200-yard medley relay, helping the team to a time of 1:47.60. She also aided the 200-yard freestyle relay to a time of 1:39.62 for victory. Individual, Helm touched in 56:41 for an NCAA B Cut qualifying time to win the 100-yard backstroke and also took first in the 200-yard backstroke in a time of 2:02.50. This is Helm's first GLIAC Swim & Dive Athlete of the Week award this season and the sixth of her career. The Wildcats defeated Findlay in both meets and will now head to Fargo, North Dakota to take on Minnesota State University Moorhead and Northern State University on this weekend.
