NEW ORLEANS -- Ashland University senior Megan Tomei is the United States Track & Field And Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) NCAA Division II Women's National Athlete of the Week, as announced on Tuesday (Jan. 10) morning.

As the only Division II woman in the shot put field at the Ohio State Buckeye Classic on Friday (Jan. 6), Tomei won with a top mark of 15.91 meters/52-feet-2.5. That mark is 0.54 meters/1-foot-9.25 better than the current No. 2 distance in D-II, is No. 7 among all collegians and is an automatic qualifying distance for the 2017 Division II national indoor meet, March 10-11 in Birmingham, Ala.

It is Tomei's first USTFCCCA weekly national honor. Tomei also has earned Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's field Athlete of the Week laurels twice this season.

Tomei is the second Ashland indoor track athlete to earn a weekly honor from the USTFCCCA. On Dec. 13, sophomore Myles Pringle garnered D-II men's National Athlete of the Week honors.
