Day One Results

FINDLAY, Ohio -- Day One of the 2017 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Indoor Track & Field Championships is in the books from the campus of the University of Findlay inside the Robert A. Malcom Athletic Center. Grand Valley State (40) holds a five-point edge over Ashland (35) in women's action with the Tiffin Dragons (48.5) three points ahead of GVSU (45.5) on the men's side through five events.

Hillsdale junior distance runner Hannah McIntyre blitzed the rest of the field with a new GLIAC record time of 16:32.44 in the 5,000 meter run. McIntyre's time was more than 12 seconds faster than the previous conference record held by Ferris State's Tina Muir set in 2009 and more than 20 seconds quicker than her next best competitor in Saturday's race.

In the second-to-last race of the night, the Walsh Women's Distance Medley Relay squad consisting of Andra Lehotay, Jetaiya Smith, Tori Reeves and Sarah Berger set a new fieldhouse record with a time of 11:38.02. Hillsdale capped the Saturday action with a triumph in the men's DMR as the relay team of Nick Fiene, Nate Eldridge, Tanner Schwannecke and Caleb Gatchell captured the top prize crossing the line in 10:00.63.

The men's 5,000 meter run featured a face-off between two of the top distance runners around - Grand Valley State junior Chris May and Tiffin senior James Ngandu. In a neck-and-neck battle throughout, May made a late surge to edge out Ngandu at the end with a time of 14:36.05. 

Findlay junior Tynelle Gumbs collected top honors in the women's weight throw a distance of 70' 4.25" to earn the gold medal, while her twin sister, Trevia, took third. Lake Erie senior Danielle Corbin earned top honors in the long jump with a leap of 19' 4.25" en route to victory.

In the men's pole vault, Hillsdale junior standout Jared Schipper successfully defended his title from one year ago with a mark of 16' 9.75". Meanwhile, the men's weight throw competition was swept by the No. 1 Ashland Eagles guided by head coach and former Olympian Jud Logan. Sophomore Daniel Roberts earned top billing with a toss of 68' 11.75" while his teammate freshman Alex Hill finished one inch back in second with senior Jordan Crayon placing third.

Tiffin senior Marquise Corbett jumped his way to the top of the men's long jump where he recorded a distance of 25' 7.25" as the Dragons take the men's lead into Sunday.
