GVSU Sweeps First Indoor Track & Field Weekly Honors

BAY CITY, Mich. -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced weekly awards following the first weekend of the 2016-17 indoor track and field season. In women's competition, Grand Valley State senior Kendra Foley earned GLIAC Track Athlete of the Week honors, while GVSU junior high jumper Kathryn Mills captured GLIAC Field Athlete of the Week accolades. On the men's side, Grand Valley State sophomore Zach Panning earned GLIAC Track Athlete of the Week distinction, while GVSU junior long jumper Isaiah Thomas captured GLIAC Field Athlete of the Week recognition.


WOMEN'S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Kendra Foley, Grand Valley State

Fresh off her individual national championship at the NCAA Division II Cross Country National Championships, Foley put up a school record in the 5000m at the GVSU Holiday Open with a time of 16:01.53. 


WOMEN'S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Kathryn Mills, Grand Valley State

The junior high jumper took first place at the GVSU Holiday Open and put up an NCAA Provisional mark to start the season. Mills recorded a height of 1.73m (5’ 8”) which was 0.13m higher than the second place finisher. 


MEN'S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Zach Panning, Grand Valley State

The Laker distance runner came in off of a fifth place finish at the NCAA Division II Cross Country National Championships.  Panning put up a school record time in the 5000m at 14:02.23 at the GVSU Holiday Open. 


MEN'S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Isaiah Thomas, Grand Valley State

The transfer from Vincennes University kicked off his GVSU career with a bang, breaking both the school record and Kelly Family Sports Center record in the long jump at the GVSU Holiday Open. Thomas put up a mark of 7.61m (24’ 11.75”).
