GLIAC Outdoor Track & Field Weekly Honors | Week 5

BAY CITY, Mich. -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced weekly awards following the fifth weekend of the 2017 outdoor track and field season. In women's competition, Grand Valley State sophomore Chant'e Roberts earned GLIAC Track Athlete of the Week honors, while Findlay junior Tynelle Gumbs captured GLIAC Field Athlete of the Week accolades. On the men's side, Findlay freshman Lenell Shelby III earned GLIAC Track Athlete of the Week distinction, while Northwood junior Paul Evans captured GLIAC Field Athlete of the Week recognition.


WOMEN'S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Chant'e Roberts - Grand Valley State

Grand Valley State Chant'e Roberts sophomore put up the fastest time in the GLIAC and the country in the 400m at the first home outdoor meet for GVSU at the Al Owens Classic over the weekend with a time of 54:65. The Lansing, Mich. native also competed on the Laker 4x400m relay team that placed first over the weekend. The 4x400m relay team of Jessica O’Connell, Rachael Walters, Angela Ritter, and Roberts put up the top time in the GLIAC and the sixth best time in the country with a time of 3:43.31.


WOMEN'S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Tynelle Gumbs - Findlay

Junior Tynelle Gumbs had a dominating weekend at the Polar Bear Invite in Ada, Ohio. Gumbs won the discus throw with a toss of 168’9”, and automatic qualifier for the NCAA DII National Championship, the top throw in the GLIAC this year, and the seventh-best throw in the country. She then took first place in the hammer throw with a distance of 192’2”, a provisional qualifier, fourth-best throw in the conference, and ninth-best throw in the country. Gumbs, a native of the British Virgin Islands, set new national records in both events.


MEN'S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Lenell Shelby III - Findlay

Freshman Lenell Shelby III had a solid showing at the Georgia Tech Invitational help in Atlanta, Georgia this past weekend. Shelby ran in the 400 meter hurdles and finished in a personal-best time of 52.30 to earn fourth place. That time was good enough to be a provisional qualifying time, is the 11th fastest in DII this season, and is the fastest time in the GLIAC this year.


MEN'S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Paul Evans - Northwood

Northwood junior Paul Evans continued the incredible season and storied career with a weekend for the ages at Grand Valley State's Al Owens Classic. Evans set two school records for Northwood – first in the men's hammer throw with a 2 meter personal best heave of 59.99, good enough for fourth place at the meet. Not to be outdone, Evans went ahead and set a school record in the men's discus throw with a 3.5 meter personal best toss of 55.15 meters, good enough for first place in the event. 

Evans' prowess in the discus and hammer throw have earned him quite the recognition. Evans now boasts the #1 ranking in the GLIAC for men's discus, and #6 in the entire country. The junior from Lenox, MI is also now #12 in the country for the men's hammer throw.
