GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced weekly awards following the first weekend of the 2018 outdoor track and field season. In women's competition, Ashland sophomore Gariana Bercheni earned GLIAC Track Athlete of the Week honors, while Ashland senior Megan Tomei captured GLIAC Field Athlete of the Week accolades. On the men's side, Ashland freshman Trevor Bassitt earned GLIAC Track Athlete of the Week distinction, while Ashland sophomore Alex Hill captured GLIAC Field Athlete of the Week recognition.
WOMEN'S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Gariana Bercheni, Ashland
Ashland sophomore Gariana Bercheni finished the women’s 100 hurdles in 15.10 seconds, the women’s 200 dash in 25.18 seconds and the 100 dash in 12.29 seconds.
WOMEN'S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Megan Tomei, Ashland
Ashland senior Megan Tomei made her return to competition after more than a year, and did so successfully. She finished second in the women’s shot put at 15.44 meters/50-feet-8, and seventh in the women’s hammer throw at 56.39 meters/185-feet-0. Tomei is second in the country in the shot put, and eighth in the nation in the hammer throw.
MEN'S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Trevor Bassitt, Ashland
Ashland freshman Trevor Bassitt finished fourth on Saturday (March 24) at the Weems Baskin Invitational in Columbia, S.C., in the men’s 110-meter hurdles, turning in a provisional time of 14.15 seconds for 2018 NCAA Division II outdoor nationals, May 24-26 in Charlotte, N.C. Bassitt’s time is fifth-best in the country in the early going outdoors.
