GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced weekly awards following the first weekend of the 2018-19 indoor track and field season. Ashland claimed three honors as Gariana Bercheni was named athlete of the week in women's track, Lindsay Baker in women's field and Jim Toth in men's field. Northwood's Mason Phillips was named men's track athlete of the week.
WOMEN'S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Gariana Bercheni, Ashland
Junior Gariana Bercheni won the women’s 60-meter hurdles in :08.98 and placed second in the 60-meter dash with a time of :07.73.
WOMEN'S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Lindsay Baker, Ashland
Lindsay Baker placed first in the women’s shot put with a new indoor freshman school record distance of 16.73 meters. Her distance was a 2019 NCAA automatic qualifier.
MEN'S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Mason Phillips, Northwood
Sophomore Mason Phillips clocked an NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the 60 meter dash in his season debut. Phillips ran :06.76 seconds in the finals to win the event in dominating fashion. His mark ties the school record of :06.76 seconds set by Matt Jackson (2000) and Will Fulton (2009).
MEN'S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Jim Toth, Ashland
Senior Jim Toth finished second in the men's weight throw with a NCAA provisional distance of 19.79 meters at Saturday’s Tiffin Alumni Open.
