Ashland's Daugherty Named To Division II Athlete of the Year Ballot

Ashland, Ohio -- Ashland University's Kari Daugherty (Fresno, Ohio/Dayton) has been selected as the Division II basketball representative on the ballot of The Collegiate Women Sports Award for the Division II Athlete of the Year. The award is sponsored by Honda.

Voting for this award will take place in June. Institutions from around the country will vote on the award.  The announcement on the 2012 award recipient will be made in Los Angeles the weekend of June 22-23.

Daugherty, a forward, helped lead the AU women?s basketball team to the NCAA Division II championship game in San Antonio.  The junior is a First Team WBCA All-American and a Daktronics First Team All-American.  She was named the Daktronics Midwest region player of the year, the GLIAC player of the year and was selected as the most valuable player at the GLIAC tournament and the NCAA Division II Midwest Region Tournament.  Daugherty led the NCAA in rebounds per game (14.1 rpg.) and in double-doubles (27). She was seventh in scoring (21.3 ppg.).  She paced the GLIAC in scoring and rebounding and was named the GLIAC South Division player of the week three times.

Daugherty established NCAA Division II Tournament records for rebounds (95) and field goals (56). She scored 148 points in the NCAA postseason, one point shy of the tournament record.

AU went 33-2 and won the first GLIAC Tournament championship in school history. The Eagles won the GLIAC regular season title and the GLIAC South Division championship. AU won 33 consecutive games ? that was the longest winning streak in the country for a NCAA Division II basketball team ? men or women.  AU won its first two games at the Elite Eight before losing to Shaw, 88-82 in overtime in the national championship game. The Eagles entered the postseason ranked second in the country.
