BAY CITY, Mich. - Northwood University junior forward Rachel Church (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek) and Ashland University junior guard/forward Kari Daugherty (Fresno, Ohio/Dayton) have been chosen as the GLIAC Women's Basketball North and South Division "Players of the Week", respectively.
GLIAC North Division Player of the Week:
Rachel Church
Northwood
5-7, Junior, Guard
Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek
Rachel Church averaged 26.0 points per game in a pair of Northwood wins last week. Church also averaged 3.0 rebounds and 1.0 blocked shots per game. She opened the season by matching her career-high with 25 points against Illinois-Springfield, connecting on six 3-point field goals. Church also added five rebounds, two blocks and two assists against the Prairie Stars. Church then bested her career-high by scoring 27 points against Mercyhurst. She went 7-13 from the floor, 5-10 from 3-point range and 8-8 from the foul line against the Lakers.

Junior Kari Daugherty led Ashland to a 1-1 record last week at the California (Pa.) Convocation Center Tipoff, losing to Minnesota State-Mankato and beating Indianapolis. Daugherty averaged 15.5 points, 12 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game in the tournament. Against MSU-Mankato she grabbed 11 rebounds and chipped in nine points. Daugherty was Ashland’s leading scorer in the 74-69 win over UIndy, and recorded a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds while shooting 8-14 from the field with five assists.

Ashland Eagles
AU went 1-1 last weekend at the
California (Pa.) Convocation Center Tipoff. AU lost in the
tourney opener, 63-46 to Minnesota State-Mankato. The next day, AU
rebounded to stop Indianapolis, 74-69…the win against
Indianapolis was the 350th of head coach Sue Ramsey’s
career. Ramsey is in her 25th year as a collegiate head
coach. Ramsey has won 255 games at Ashland. That’s the
highest win total for any women’s basketball coach in Ashland
history…junior guard-forward Kari Daugherty (Fresno,
Ohio/Dayton) posted a double-double against Indianapolis. The
transfer from Dayton had 22 points and 13 rebounds against the
Greyhounds…before the trip to California, AU won a preseason
game at IPFW, 79-74, last Tuesday (Nov. 8). Daugherty had 26
points and 17 rebounds in that game…the Eagles have one game
this week – Saturday (Nov. 19) at Kentucky Wesleyan.
That’s one of three games the Eagles will play against GLVC
schools in the season’s first several weeks. In
addition to the game against Indianapolis last weekend and this
week’s game at KWC, AU plays Saint Joseph’s on Nov.
27.
Ferris State Bulldogs
The Ferris State University women’s basketball team started off its 2011-12 campaign on a winning note as the Bulldogs defeated a regional opponent in Lewis (Ill.) by a 81-72 count inside Jim Wink Arena in Big Rapids. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 45-29 lead at halftime and held a 20-point advantage with 16:34 to play en route to the victory. FSU received a game-high 30 points from sophomore guard Sarah DeShone, who was 10-of-14 from the floor and five-of-eight beyond the three-point arc. She added four steals. Senior forward Lindsey Pettit added 17 points in the win while sophomore forward Nikki Arner chipped in with 12 points and five rebounds. Ferris State shot 55.1% (27-49) from the floor and connected on six-of-17 (35.3%) three-pointers to go with a 21-of-27 (77.8%) showing at the free throw line. Ferris State hits the road next weekend and will take part in the Lander Lady Bearcats Tipoff Classic in Greenwood, S.C. FSU opens action against South Carolina-Aiken on Saturday, Nov. 19, at 3 p.m. (ET) before facing host Lander on Sunday, Nov. 20, at 4 p.m. (ET).
Findlay
Oilers
The Oilers began the year with a
73-61 at home over Slippery Rock. Findlay used a 13-1 run
over the final five minutes to capture the victory. Senior
guard Clare Aubry led the team with 18 points on 6-of-13
shooting. She also added four assists, three rebounds, two
steals and a block. Sophomore guard Saira House and freshman
forward Lacey Kessler both came off the bench to contribute 13 and
12 points, respectively, with five rebounds apiece. As a
team, the Oilers shot 44 percent (22-of-50) from the floor while
connecting on 25-of-30 (83.3%) of their free throw attempts.
The Oilers out-scored Slippery Rock 36-18 in the paint and also
held a 36-8 advantage in bench points.
Grand Valley State Lakers
GVSU returns four starters from a season ago and welcomes two freshman to the squad. The Lakers also get redshirt sophomore Kellie Watson and redshirt freshman Emily England back in the line up. Grand Valley State has nine days off to rebound from a 66-47 loss to Saint Joseph’s on Sunday. The Lakers host Aquinas on Tuesday, Nov. 22 in their home opener.
Hillsdale Chargers
Hillsdale has yet to play a regular
season game this year, but will be making a weekend road trip to
Ohio to take on Notre Dame (Ohio) at 6:00 pm Friday night and
Cedarville (Ohio) at 5:30 pm Saturday night.
Lake Erie Storm
The Storm officially opened the
2011-12 season in impressive fashion with a wire-to-wire 97-31
victory over traditional nonconference rival Ursuline College on
Saturday night. Earlier in the week, a shorthanded Storm team
trailed at Division I Ohio University by just three points in the
second half (28-25) before the deeper Bobcats pulled away for a
70-52 win in an exhibition game on Tuesday night. Lake Erie
was missing two starters and two key reserves due to class
conflicts and illness… the 66-point margin of victory over
Ursuline was the highest in school history, surpassing the 62 point
margin in a 90-28 win over Kent State-Ashtabula on Jan. 30,
1989… junior guard Taylor Rogers scored a career-high 13
points to share scoring honors with senior guard Britt
Busson. Busson had a career-high six steals as the Storm
forced the Arrows into 36 turnovers and limited Ursuline to just
17.5% shooting… Saturday night marked the fifth time in
seven seasons the Storm won its home opener and the second straight
year LEC opened its season with a victory.
Lake Superior State Lakers
LSSU first-year head coach Justin
Rees debuted against defending Big Ten champion Michigan State on
Nov. 3 and lost 94-31. The Lakers gave Rees a 59-52 victory over
Mercyhurst on Nov. 11 during his first official game as they opened
with a 1-1 finish at the Timberwolf Classic. Junior forward Maria
Blazejewski (Beulah, Mich.) averaged 14.5 points and 9.5 rebounds
per game to lead LSSU. Senior forward Sarah Cubr (Riverview, Mich.)
made 7-of-12 three-point attempts and chipped in 10.5 points per
game. Blazejewski was named to the pre-season All-GLIAC First Team,
while senior center Cassy Schemberger (Park Falls, Wis.) was named
to the second team. Schemberger averaged 6.5 points and 7.5
rebounds per game last weekend.
Michigan Tech. Huskies
Michigan Tech opened the 2011-12
season with a 64-52 win over NAIA foe Madonna. Senior Lynn Giesler
and junior Sam Hoyt each scored a team-high 13 points. Senior
Lindsey Lindstrom added 12 points. Tech struggled from the free
throw line shooting just 50 percent (13-26). The Huskies dominated
the boards finishing with a 47-38 advantage. Michigan Tech will
host cross bridge rival Finlandia Tuesday (Nov. 15). Tech will play
at Indianapolis Saturday (Nov. 19).
Northern Michigan Wildcats
The Northern
Michigan women’s basketball team fell to Minnesota-Duluth
63-60 in its home opener…The Wildcats were led by senior
guard Chelsea Lyons with 17 points and eight
rebounds…Freshman guard Alyssa Colla had 12 points and five
rebounds in her first collegiate start…NMU travels to
Northwood University for the Northwood Classic this
weekend…The ‘Cats face Alma College on Friday (Nov.
18) and Urbana University Saturday (Nov. 19).
Northwood Timberwolves
Northwood opened the season with a
pair of home wins last week, defeating Illinois-Springfield 71-62
before downing Mercyhurst 82-71 … Northwood was led by a
pair of upper classmen for the week – junior Rachel Church
(Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek) senior Savannah Stedman (Ortonville,
Mich./Brandon) … Church averaged 26.0 points per game,
scoring career-highs in both games (25 vs. Illinois-Springfield, 27
against Mercyhurst) … she shot 50.0 percent from the floor,
connected on 11 3-point field goals and went 11-11 from the foul
line … Church had two blocked shots for the week
– she had blocked a total of one shot in the first 62 games
of her career … Stedman averaged 24.0 points, 13.5 rebounds
and 2.5 blocks per game … Stedman shot 69.6 percent from the
floor and 83.3 percent from the foul line for the week … a
pair of freshman were very impressive for the Timberwolves as well
… point guard Gabrielle Rivette (Fenton, Mich.) averaged
11.5 points, 6.5 assists, 4.0 rebounds and 3.5 steals per game for
NU … Kaitlin Susan (Grand Rapids, Mich./Byron Center) opened
her career with a 15 rebound game and averaged 11.5 boards over the
two games … Northwood will host Urbana and Alma Friday and
Saturday (November 18-19).
Ohio Dominican Panthers
The Panthers open the 2011-12
campaign at 7:30 p.m. this Tuesday, Nov. 15 as the women head north
to battle former AMC foe, Malone. ODU hosts Ursuline in its home
opener at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 19.
Saginaw Valley State Cardinals
The Saginaw Valley State University women’s basketball team dropped their season-opener to Southern Indiana on Saturday evening by a 76-62 decision. The Cardinals were led by sophomore guard Kayla Womack who recorded a game-high 17 points and eight rebounds in the loss. Junior forward Cheritee Green finished with nine points and nine rebounds, while Jasmine Woods tallied 11 points in the contest. Grace Herzog rounded out the SVSU attack with 13 points and nine rebounds. Saginaw Valley will travel to Wisconsin-Parkside on Saturday for a 1:00 pm tip in hopes of notching their first victory under first-year head coach Jamie Pewinski.
Tiffin Dragons
Tiffin University’s
women’s basketball team opened on a 13-4 run and never looked
back, streaking past Salem International in their season debut
64-30 at the Gillmor Center. Eleven different Dragons scored in the
game, with Mandy Jaeb totaling 12 points with 4 assists and 3
steals. Karli Mast had 11 points. Jessica Harris had 7 points and 7
rebounds while Melissa Gilliland also had 7 points…TU
outrebounded Salem 44-33, with Harris (7), Jillian Adams (7), and
Amanda Baute (6) leading the way. Tiffin also had 10 different
players with assists…Jaeb now has 1223 career points, fifth
all-time for TU. She is closing in on Laura Goins, who stands
fourth with 1301 points.
Wayne State Warriors
Wayne State
recorded its first opening night win since 2008 with a 76-51
victory over Rochester College on Friday … WSU controlled
the points in the paint category outscoring its counterpart, 50-6
… Phaebre Colbert led with a game-high 21 points (7-of-11
FG, 7-of-9 FT) and eight rebounds … junior guard Paige
Sickmiller nearly tallied a double-double with 17 points (7-of-11,
2-of-3 3FG) and nine rebounds … graduate student Stefani
Munro recorded nine points, seven assists, six rebounds and five
steals … junior center Juanita Cochran contributed eight
points and seven rebounds including six offense boards …
Wayne State garnered 36 points off turnovers, held a 51-26
rebounding advantage and posted 20 fast break points … WSU
hosts Lake Superior State in a non-conference game on Saturday,
Nov. 19 at 4 p.m.
