BAY CITY, Mich. - Michigan Technological University junior guard Sam Hoyt (Arkansaw, Wis./Durand) and Hillsdale College sophomore guard Marissa DeMott (Sandusky, Mich.) have been chosen as the GLIAC Women's Basketball North and South Division "Players of the Week", respectively.
GLIAC North Division Player of the Week:
Sam Hoyt
Michigan Tech
5-5, Junior, Guard
Arkansaw, Wis./Durand
Junior Sam Hoyt averaged 17.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 2.5 steals per game on her way to earning the Radisson Roseville Classic MVP award. Hoyt led Michigan Tech to a 2-0 record in the tournament that was hosted by Concordia-St. Paul. She tallied nine points, five assists, four steals, and two blocks in the 62-52 victory against Minnesota-Crookston. In the 66-52 win over Concordia-St. Paul, Hoyt set career-highs in points (26) and rebounds (6) and shot 8-16 from the field and 6-6 from the foul line.

Sophomore guard Marissa DeMott led the Hillsdale to a 2-0 record at the Oahu Classic in Hawaii last week. For the week, DeMott averaged 22.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.5 blocks per game as the Chargers defeated Hawaii-Pacific, and Northwest Missouri State. She shot 57 percent from 3-point range and 53 percent from the floor overall, in addition to putting together her first two 20-point games of her career, coming in back-to-back contests. In Friday’s win over NWMSU, she had a career-high three blocked shots.

Ashland Eagles
AU begins the week with a four-game
winning streak…Ashland’s last two wins came over the
weekend in the Ashland Holiday Inn Classic. The Eagles had a
27-point lead at halftime in both games…the Eagles are 13-2
in their last 15 games at Kates Gymnasium…Sunday’s
39-point win over Saint Joseph’s (81-42) was AU’s
largest margin of victory since a 40-point win (101-61) over
Saginaw Valley State in 2009…junior forward Kari Daugherty
scored a season-high 28 points in the win over Saint
Joseph’s. Daugherty has three, 20-point games this
season…sophomore guard-forward Ashley Dorner (Bellville,
Ohio/Clear Fork) ripped down a career-high 12 rebounds against
Saint Joseph’s…the Eagles open the GLIAC portion of
the schedule this week with games against Hillsdale and Wayne
State. The Eagles went 1-1 against both teams last season.
The Eagles will meet the Chargers twice within 16 days.
Ferris State Bulldogs
The Ferris State University
women’s basketball team did not play this past week.
The Bulldogs are currently 2-1 overall this campaign.
Sophomore guard Sarah DeShone (Elkhart, Ind./Jimtown) is currently
averaging a team-high 15.7 points per game this campaign after
three contests. FSU opens GLIAC action on the road this coming week
as the Bulldogs visit Tiffin on Thursday, Dec. 1, for a 6 p.m. (ET)
league tilt in Tiffin, Ohio. FSU then visits Ohio Dominican for the
first-time ever on Saturday, Dec. 3, with tipoff set for 1 p.m.
(ET) in Columbus, Ohio.
Findlay
Oilers
The Oilers won their only game last
week, 76-50 over Urbana at home. Junior forward Kayla Brown
scored a season-high 17 points in the victory. The Oilers
shot a season-high 51.9 percent (28-of-54) from the floor and
scored 42 of their points in the paint. The Oilers also
racked up a season-high 23 assists on their 28 field goals and
out-rebounded Urbana by a 39-29 margin. On the season, senior
guard Clare Aubry is scoring 13.3 points per game while Brown is
chipping in 12.8.
Grand Valley State Lakers
GVSU went 1-1 last week, led by double-figure performances from
juniors Alex Stelfox and Brittany Taylor and redshirt sophomore
Kellie Watson. In their three games, the Lakers have
outrebounded their opponents 123-94 and are holding opponents to
less than 37 percent shooting. GVSU now has four games in nine
days, including beginning GLIAC play to open up December.
Hillsdale Chargers
The Hillsdale College women’s
basketball team would have had a nice time in Hawaii on
Thanksgiving Weekend anyway, but it came away with two wins, to
improve its 2011-12 record to 3-1 heading into GLIAC
play…The Chargers beat the host school of the Oahu Classic,
Hawaii-Pacific, 89-88 Thursday, before taking down Northwest
Missouri State University 70-64 Friday…NWMSU was a final
four team in Division II last year…All five starters scored
in double figures in Thursday’s game, and Friday, junior Lea
Jones grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds…Sophomore Marissa
DeMott had a big weekend, averaging 22.5 points per game while
shooting 57 percent from 3-point land…She also blocked a
career-high three shots against the Bearcats…DeMott’s
24 points against Hawaii-Pacific were a career-high…
Hillsdale opens up GLIAC play this week on the road, taking on
Ashland and Lake Erie College.
Lake Erie Storm
Lake Erie moved to 4-0 for the
first time in school history with a 86-62 win at Pitt-Johnstown in
the team’s only game last week. Senior forward Jen
Caiola hit a season-high five three-pointers and scored a
season-high 24 points in the victory. She needs just 27 points to
reach 1,000 for her career… senior center Stephanie Rogers
recorded her second straight double-double at UPJ, finishing with
12 points and a season-high 14 rebounds. She is averaging 16.7
points and 10.7 rebounds in her last three contests... senior guard
Britt Busson handed out a season-high six assists in the win,
giving her 200 for her career – the fifth most ever at Lake
Erie… sophomore Chrissy Delaney scored a career-high 11
points at UPJ… after a break for the Thanksgiving holiday,
the Storm has three contests this week. They open the week
Tuesday with a nonconference game at home against Wheeling Jesuit
and then begin league play with home games against Wayne State and
Hillsdale.
Lake Superior State Lakers
After getting off to a slow start
this season, senior center Cassy Schemberger (Park Falls, Wis.)
broke out with double doubles in scoring and rebounding during both
games of the Holiday Inn Express Classic at Ashland. Schemberger
averaged 15.0 points and 11.5 rebounds per game while shooting 61.9
percent from the field. Schemberger averaged 6.5 points and 5.8
rebounds per game during the Lakers’ first four games of
2011-12. Junior forward Maria Blazejewski (Beulah, Wis.) averaged
18.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 5.5 assists per game for the weekend.
Blazejewski has scored 20 or more points during four of the
Lakers’ last five games. Senior guard Jasmine Brown (Romulus,
Mich.) scored a season-high 10 points during the Lakers’
66-54 victory over Oakland City. LSSU begins GLIAC play this week
with games Thursday at Saginaw Valley State and Saturday at
Northwood. The Lakers were 2-0 against SVSU and 1-1 against NU last
season. Thursday’s contest will be the Lakers’ first
against their former coach, Jamie Pewinski, who took over the
Cardinals’ program this season.
Michigan Tech. Huskies
Michigan Tech won both of its games
at the Radisson Roseville Classic in St. Paul, Minn. The Huskies
defeated Minn.-Crookston 62-52 and Concordia-St. Paul 66-52. Junior
guard Sam Hoyt was named tournament MVP after scoring a career-high
26 points and grabbed a career-high six rebounds against CSP.
Senior center Lynn Giesler also earned all-tournament team honors
with a career-high 18 points. Junior Emma Veach currently ranks
third in the league in 3-point percentage (.625) and fifth in field
goal percentage (.579). Tech will host rival Northern Michigan to
open GLIAC play Saturday (Dec. 3). Michigan Tech has won its last
34 games at home.
Northern Michigan Wildcats
The Northern
Michigan women’s basketball team is now 2-3 on the season
following a 63-49 loss against Marian University (Nov. 25) and a
68-55 loss against the University of Indianapolis (Nov. 26) at the
University of Indianapolis Thanksgiving Classic…Senior guard
Chelsea Lyons led the way for the Wildcats, scoring 21 points and
grabbing 7 rebounds during the weekend…The ‘Cats bench
combined to score 50 points over the weekend…NMU travels to
Davenport University on (Nov. 28) and opens GLIAC play at rival
Michigan Tech on (Dec. 3).
Northwood Timberwolves
The Northwood University
women’s basketball team dropped its first game of the season
Tuesday falling 90-77 at Southern Indiana … Northwood is now
4-1 overall … free throws and fouls were the story of the
game … the two teams combined to shoot 88 free throws and
commit 59 fouls … Northwood’s 53 free throw attempts
and 37 makes are both new school records, beating the old marks of
47 and 33 set in a game against Hillsdale February 16, 1993
… Southern Indiana had five players foul out of the game.
Northwood nearly had as many free throw attempts as field goal
attempts (55) … four Timberwolves finished in double
figures, led by Savannah Stedman (Ortonville, Mich./Brandon)
… she registered her third double-double of the season,
finishing with 18 points and 11 rebounds … Rachel Church
(Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek) had 16 points, while Megan Gonta
(Brighton, Mich.) and Sarah Spring (Brighton, Mich.) each had
season-highs in points with 13 and 11, respectively …
freshman Kaitlin Susan (Grand Rapids, Mich./Byron Center) had nine
points, 10 rebounds, three blocks and two steals … Northwood
will open GLIAC play at Findlay Thursday before hosting Lake
Superior State Saturday.
Ohio Dominican Panthers
ODU continued its hot start to the
year, picking up a pair of wins against Molloy (60-56) and NYIT
(77-73) on its New York Thanksgiving trip to improve to 4-0, its
best start since 2007-08 when the Panthers rattled off nine
straight to begin the season. Senior forward Abby Glover
(Centerville, OH) averaged 15.5 points and 12.5 rebounds per game
in the two victories with two double-doubles, going 11-of-19 (57.9
percent) from the field and 9-of-12 (75.0 percent) at the charity
stripe. Classmate Meredith Fox (Springboro, OH) averaged 14.5
points and 6.5 boards per contest, finishing 5-of-12 (41.7 percent)
from long range, while senior Katy Rasor (Grove City, OH) chipped
in 11 points per game, including 15 points on a career-best tying
five triples on Wednesday. Sophomore Katelyn Stuckey (Millersburg,
OH) came off the bench to average a double-double with 10.0 points
and 13.0 rebounds, including a career-best 17 boards in 25 minutes
at Molloy, the most by a Panther since Summer Hale had 15 against
Lake Erie on Feb. 13, 2010. Freshman Paige Stought (Pickerington,
OH) also came off the bench to average 9.0 points behind 7-of-11
from the field. ODU returns home for its final two home games of
the calendar year, beginning Thursday, Dec. 1 as USA Today/ESPN
preseason No. 21 Grand Valley State (Mich.) visits for the 5:30
p.m. conference opener, followed by a bout with Ferris State
(Mich.) on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Saginaw Valley State Cardinals
The Saginaw Valley State University
women’s basketball team split their two games this weekend at
the UIndy Thanksgiving Classic. They fell in their first game to
Indianapolis, 73-54 before defeating Marian 63-59 for their first
win of the season. Cheritee Green would lead the Cardinals in
scoring (15 PPG) and rebounds (9.5 RPG) this past weekend at the
UIndy Thanksgiving Classic. She recorded her first double-double of
the season against Indianapolis on Friday with 16 points and 11
rebounds and followed it up with a 14 point, eight rebound
performance in SVSU’s 63-59 victory over Marian (Ind.) on
Saturday. Jasmine Woods helped lead the way to Saginaw
Valley’s first win of the season going a perfect 14-for-14
from the free throw line for the game. All of Woods’ free
throws came in the second half against Marian. SVSU is averaging
57.2 points per game this season and have forced their opponents
into 61 turnovers through four games this season. SVSU will return
to action on December 1 when they host Lake Superior State
University for their 2011-12 GLIAC opener at James E. O’Neill
Arena at 6:00 PM.
Tiffin Dragons
Karli Mast led the Dragons to a
76-43 win at Malone with 21 points and a team-high 4 three pointers
on 5 shots. She totaled 14 of those points by halftime as TU jumped
out to a 30-7 lead in improving to 3-0 this season…Jessica
Harris had 12 points, while Stephanie Kelly also finished in double
figures with 10 points. Mandy Jaeb had 8 points, and Amanda Baute
had 6 points with a team-best 10 rebounds..…Mast now has 644
career points, 24th on TU’s career scoring list….Jaeb
now has 1253 career points, fifth all-time for TU. She is closing
in on Laura Goins, who stands fourth with 1301 points. Jaeb also
has 119 career treys, fourth all-time for TU. She trails
third-place Leanne Lucius’s total of 148…Jessica
Harris is now second all-time for the Dragons in per game
rebounding average with 8.7. She has 477 rebounds in 55 career
games.
Wayne State Warriors
Wayne State is
off to a 4-0 start after a pair of non-conference wins last week
– 66-60 at Malone on Nov. 21 and 84-59 at home vs. Kentucky
Wesleyan on Nov. 26 … this is the best start since the
1994-95 Tartar squad began 7-0 … WSU will play its next
three games against GLIAC opponents before playing its final
non-conference road game at St. Joseph on Dec. 10 … junior
forward Deanna Crumpton (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood) scored in
double figures in both contests last week and has reached double
digits in four of her last five games dating back to last season
… junior center Juanita Cochran (Saginaw, Mich./Arthur Hill)
nearly had a double-double against the Pioneers with 15 points and
nine rebounds … the 84 points scored by the Warriors vs. KWC
was the most since tallying 93 on Jan. 26, 2008, against
Mercyhurst.
