BAY CITY, Mich. - Ferris State University sophomore guard Sarah DeShone (Elkhart, Ind./Jimtown) and Ashland University senior guard Jena Stutzman (Berlin, Ohio/Hiland) have been chosen as the GLIAC Women's Basketball North and South Division "Players of the Week", respectively.
GLIAC North Division Player of the Week:

Sophomore guard Sarah DeShone
averaged a team-high 15.5 points per contest during the Bulldogs
road trip to Ohio this past week. For the week, DeShone recorded 31
points, eight rebounds, seven assists and three steals in the
two-game stretch while shooting 52.2% (12-23) from the floor and
75% (6-8) beyond the three-point arc. She had 13 points and five
assists against Tiffin before coming back to notch 18 points and
seven rebounds against Ohio Dominican. DeShone currently ranks
second in the GLIAC in assists with 4.8 per game.

Senior guard Jena Stutzman averaged
23.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 5.5 assists, while leading the
Eagles to a 2-0 week with wins over Hillsdale College and Wayne
State University. For the week Stutzman shot 51.7% from the field,
45.0% behind the three point line, and a perfect 100% from the
free-throw line. The 25 points she scored in the 74-66 win over
Wayne State is a season high. These two games were Stutzman’s
first 20-point games of the season. She is currently ranked fifth
in the league in scoring with 16.3 points per game.

Ashland Eagles
The Eagles have a six-game winning
streak. AU’s only game this week is on Sunday (Dec. 11)
against Lake Erie...the Eagles defeated Wayne State, 74-66. That
was Ashland’s first margin of victory under 10 points since a
74-69 win against Indianapolis on Nov. 13…senior guard Jena
Stutzman (Berlin, Ohio/Kent State) averaged 23.0 ppg., in the two
games last week. She scored 21 points against Hillsdale and 25
against Wayne State. Those are Stutzman’s first two 20-point
games of the season. The 25 points is a season
high…the Eagles are 4-0 at home this season.
Sunday’s game against Lake Erie will end a five-game
homestand…AU had collected at least 40 rebounds in four
consecutive games before pulling down 36 missed shots against Wayne
State…sophomore guard-forward Ashley Dorner (Bellville,
Ohio/Clear Fork) has averaged 7.3 rpg., over the last three games.
Dorner missed all of last season due to a knee injury…junior
forward Kari Daugherty (Fresno, Ohio/Dayton) tied her season high
for points when she scored 28 points against Wayne State.
Daugherty has five, 20-point games this season.
Ferris State Bulldogs
The Ferris State University
women’s basketball squad salvaged a road split with a 69-58
victory over previously unbeaten Ohio Dominican on Saturday (Dec.
3) in Columbus, Ohio. Sophomore guard Sarah DeShone tallied a
game-high 18 points as FSU improved to 3-2 on the year. The
Bulldogs bounced back from a 78-49 loss in their league opener at
Tiffin Thursday (Dec. 1) night. DeShone averaged a team-high 15.5
points per contest as the Bulldogs split the two league
games. She netted 31 points, eight rebounds, seven assists
and three steals in the two-game stretch while shooting 52.2%
(12-23) from the floor and 75% (6-8) beyond the three-point
arc. DeShone had 13 points and five assists in
Thursday’s (Dec. 1) league-opening loss at Tiffin before
coming back to notch 18 points and seven rebounds in
Saturday’s win. The Bulldogs snapped a two-game losing streak
with Saturday’s win in their first-ever trip to Ohio
Dominican. DeShone is currently averaging a team-best 15.6 points
per game this campaign. Freshman forward Christina Branch tallied
her first career double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds
against the Panthers on Saturday. The Bulldogs visit Northwood this
Saturday (Dec. 10) for a 4 p.m. (ET) league tilt in Midland,
Mich.
Findlay
Oilers
The Oilers won their only game of
the week, 59-44 against Northwood at home on December 1. The
Oilers held the Timberwolves scoreless for the final 11 minutes of
the game, going on a 19-0 run en route to victory. As a team,
the Oilers came up with a season-high 19 steals and forced
Northwood into 30 turnovers, which led to 29 points for
Findlay. Senior forward Kaitlyn Nelson led the Oilers with a
season-high 16 points and six rebounds. She hit 8-of-13 shots
and also added three blocks and two steals. Junior forward
Kayla Brown continued her solid play with 15 points, seven rebounds
and six steals while sophomore guard Saira House added seven
points, seven assists, a career-high seven steals and six
rebounds.
Grand Valley State Lakers
GVSU opened GLIAC play with a 1-1 record and also picked up a
win against GLVC rival, Urbana earlier in the week. The
Lakers 40-point victory was the most this season and the 45 points
from Urbana was the lowest opponent output as well. GVSU
ended defeated previously unbeaten Tiffin in the Lakers second
conference game of the year and kept their all-time record against
the Dragons intact at 7-0. Junior Brittany Taylor has tallied
double-digit point totals in each of the opening six games,
averaging 12.7 points, while also pulling down 4.7 rebounds per
game. Juniors Alex Stelfox and Briauna Taylor are also
putting in great work on the floor averaging 10.0 and 9.8 points,
respectively. Briauna Taylor also leads the team in rebounds
(6.0) and is second on the team in assists with 10.
Hillsdale Chargers
The Hillsdale College women’s basketball team lost each of its first two conference games last week, falling to both Ashland and Lake Erie College on the road…The team will play its first home games of the 2011-12 season this week, hosting Findlay Thursday followed by Lake Superior State Saturday…The Chargers are the most prolific 3-point shooting team in the conference, averaging 8.3 makes per game through six games this season…One of the team’s most improved players is sophomore Angela Bisaro, who has scored in double figures in five of the team’s six games this season after achieving that mark a total of two times in 2010-11…Senior guard Chelsea Harrison leads Hillsdale with a 16.5 points per game scoring average, and has two 20-point games this season…The Chargers’ 71 points per game rank them fourth in the conference…Bisaro, Harrison and Marissa DeMott are each ranked in the top 20 in the GLIAC in scoring average…DeMott has made all 17 of her free throws so far this season.
Lake Erie Storm
The Storm is 7-0 overall and 2-0 in
the GLIAC for the first time in school history… in the win
over Wayne State, senior Jen Caiola scored a game-high 25 points,
including the 1,000th point of her career. She now has
1,010 points and joins six others in the 1,000-point club at Lake
Erie, including classmate Stephanie Rogers (1,095)... Rogers
herself had a big week, averaging 20.7 points and 10.3 rebounds in
three games, including a pair of double-doubles in the first two
contests. She had a career-high 29 points and a season-best
15 rebounds in the 83-54 win over Wheeling Jesuit and then opened
league play with 20 points and 13 boards in an 81-71 win over
Hillsdale… Alyssa Wagers added 18 points and 10.7 rebounds
per game last week, posting double-doubles in the two GLIAC
games… the Storm has held five of its seven opponents under
65 points and all under 73… LEC is forcing 26.4 turnovers
per contest and holding opponents under 37% shooting.
Meanwhile, the LEC offense is connecting on 44% of its shots and
scoring 85.6 points per game… Thursday night’s game
against Wayne State was the 700th in LEC history… the
current 7-game win streak is the longest ever to open a season for
the Storm and the third longest win streak at any point.
Lake Superior State Lakers
Junior forward Maria Blazejewski
(Beulah, Mich.) averaged 17.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game to
lead LSSU during last week’s road losses to Saginaw Valley
State and Northwood. Blazejewski is ranked second in the GLIAC in
overall scoring at 18.1 points per game and 12th in rebounding at
6.9 rebounds per game. Senior center Cassy Schemberger totaled a
career-high 19 rebounds during last Saturday’s 66-50 loss at
Northwood. Schemberger is ranked sixth in the GLIAC in overall
rebounding at 9.3 rpg. The Lakers play at Hillsdale on Saturday and
were 1-1 against the Chargers last season. Their 2010-11 season
ended with an 81-79 double-overtime loss to Hillsdale during the
first round of the GLIAC Tournament.
Michigan Tech. Huskies
Michigan Tech defeated Northern
Michigan 72-49 in its only game last week. Senior Krista Kasuboski
scored a career and game-high 19 points against the Wildcats. The
Huskies scored a season-high 72 points against the Wildcats. The
Huskies rank second in the league in scoring defense at 51.7 points
per game and first in defensive rebounds 32.0. Junior Emma Veach
ranks second in the league in both 3-point field goal percentage
(.571) and assist-to-turnover ratio (3.6). Tech will play a pair of
games at home this week against Ohio Dominican Thursday (Dec. 8)
and Tiffin Saturday (Dec. 10).
Northern Michigan Wildcats
The Northern
Michigan women’s basketball team is now 3-4, 0-1 on the
season following a 56-50 win over Davenport University (Nov. 28)
and a 72-49 loss to No. 8 Michigan Tech (Dec. 3)…Freshman
guard Alyssa Colla led the Wildcats during the week, averaging 12
points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists…NMU ranks fifth in the
conference in 3-point goal percentage with a .342 percentage per
contest…Senior guard Chelsea Lyons ranks 10th in the
conference in defensive rebounds per game averaging 5.1 per
contest…The ‘Cats open the home portion of their
conference schedule this week hosting Tiffin University (Dec. 8)
and Ohio Dominican (Dec. 10).
Northwood Timberwolves
Northwood went 1-1 last week,
falling at Findlay 59-44 before defeating Lake Superior State 66-50
… the Timberwolves are now 5-2 overall, 1-1 in the GLIAC
… NU head coach Jeff Curtis earned his 100th career victory
in the win over Lake Superior State … he is now 100-95
(.513) overall in his eight seasons at NU … his record over
the past five seasons stands at 72-45 (.615) … sophomore
Sarah Spring (Brighton, Mich.) had a strong week for NU, averaging
16 points per game … she scored 15 points at Findlay before
netting a career-high 17 points in the win over LSSU … over
her last three games, Spring has scored 43 points, good for an
average of 14.3 ppg … she scored 19 points over NU’s
first four games (4.8 ppg) … Savannah Stedman (Ortonville,
Mich./Brandon) had a pair of double-doubles last week, finishing
with 11 points and 10 rebounds at Findlay and 18 points and 12
rebounds versus LSSU … Northwood will host Grand Valley
State and Ferris State this week.
Ohio Dominican Panthers
The Panthers split their final home
contests of the calendar year last week, rallying for a 76-58
come-from-behind win over Grand Valley State on Thursday, before
suffering their first setback of the year 69-56 to Ferris State on
Saturday afternoon. Trailing 28-6 midway through the first half on
Thursday, ODU mounted a remarkable 41-8 surge, consisting of runs
of 19-0 and 16-0, to knock off the preseason No. 21 Lakers. The
22-point deficit overcome was just five points shy of matching the
NCAA record for largest margin overcome for victory. The Panthers
shot a season-high 48.1 percent (25-of-52) against GVSU, including
13-of-22 (59.1 percent), 4-of-5 on threes and 15-of-17 (88.2
percent) at the free throw line in the second half. Abby Glover
(Centerville, OH) posted her third straight double-double with 18
points and 10 boards, while freshman Kacee Hockenberry (Haviland,
OH) added a career-best 16 points on a 7-of-8 effort at the line.
After Thursday’s emotional high, ODU struggled to match
Ferris State’s fire-power as the Bulldogs cruised for the
wire-to-wire win. Sophomore Katelyn Stuckey (Millersburg, OH)
finish the week 16-of-17 (94.1 percent) at the charity stripe and
move into seventh in the GLIAC rankings with an 87.9 (29-of-33)
percentage. ODU travels to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula to play
Michigan Tech Thursday at 5:30, followed by a 1 p.m. visit on
Saturday to Northern Michigan.
Saginaw Valley State Cardinals
The Saginaw Valley State University
women’s basketball team won their second straight game of the
season, defeating Lake Superior State University 73-58 on Thursday
in their GLIAC opener. The win was the Cardinals first win to
open GLIAC play since they defeated Wayne State 89-77 in 2004-05.
Jasmine Woods scored 27 points on 10-of-13 shooting in the win over
LSSU. She scored 15 points in the second half, going 6-for-7
from the floor to help the Cardinals improve to 2-3 overall.
The win also snapped a three game losing streak to LSSU. SVSU
is averaging 60.4 points per game this season and have outrebounded
their opponents in all five games this season, holding a rebound
margin of +7.4. The Cardinals are also shooting .748 (77-for-103)
from the free throw line on the season. Saginaw Valley will
play three games this week. They will host Madonna at James
E. O’Neill Arena at 6:00 PM on Monday, before hitting the
road for conference games at Wayne State on Thursday and Findlay on
Saturday.
Tiffin Dragons
Mandy Jaeb Mast led the Dragons to
a 78-49 GLIAC win over Ferris State before dropping a close game
against Grand Valley State 69-63 during their 1-1 week. Jaeb had 26
points against the Lakers to lead the Dragons… Four Dragons
players finished in double figures against the Bulldogs. The
Dragons drained 9 treys overall, while Jaeb also led the Dragons
with 5 assists. Amanda Baute had 8 points and 5 rebounds, while
Jessica Harris was the top rebounder for the Dragons with 7
rebounds. .. Mandy Jaeb led the Dragons with 26 points against the
Lakers while Karli Mast also had 10 points and 7 rebounds with 4
assists and 4 steals. Jessica Harris had 9 points and 5 rebounds
while Melissa Gilliland also had 7 points. Holly Focke added 9
rebounds to lead the team...…Mast now has 666 career points,
24th on TU’s career scoring list….Jaeb now has 1291
career points, fifth all-time for TU. She is closing in on Laura
Goins, who stands fourth with 1301 points. Jaeb also has 121 career
treys, fourth all-time for TU. She trails third-place Leanne
Lucius’s total of 148…Jessica Harris is now second
all-time for the Dragons in per game rebounding average with 8.5.
She has 489 rebounds in 57 career games.
Wayne State Warriors
Wayne State
fell twice last week as it began league play with a trip to Ohio
… junior forward Deanna Crumpton (Kentwood, Mich./East
Kentwood) led the Warriors by scoring in double figures each
contest … Crumpton tallied 31 points and nine rebounds
against Lake Erie and Ashland, while junior center Juanita Cochran
(Saginaw, Mich./Arthur Hill) contributed 24 points and 10 rebounds
… senior guard Stefani Munro (Harrison Twp., Mich. / Mount
Clemens) recorded 18 points and eight assists, while junior forward
Phaebre Colbert (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Forest Hills Northern) added
18 points and 13 rebounds … junior guard Paige Sickmiller
(Romeo, Mich.) posted 14 points and 11 rebounds in the two matches
… WSU’s lone game this week is a home contest on
Thursday against Saginaw Valley … the game will be televised
live throughout the state of Michigan on Comcast Channel 900 with
Dave Zoran, Shane Battier and Joe Abramson serving as the
announcers … the Warriors conclude the pre-holiday schedule
with a pair of home games on Dec. 15 and Dec. 17.
