BAY CITY, Mich. - Michigan Technological University senior forward Lindsey Lindstrom (Superior, Wis.) and Hillsdale College senior guard Chelsea Harrison (Lowell, Mich.) have been chosen as the GLIAC Women's Basketball North and South Division "Players of the Week", respectively.
GLIAC North Division Player of the Week:
Lindsey Lindstrom

Superior, Wis.
Senior forward Lindsey Lindstrom helped lead Michigan Tech to a perfect 2-0 record last week with wins over Ohio Dominican and Tiffin. For the week Lindstrom averaged 12.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, 2.0 steals, and 2.0 assists per game while shooting 62.5 percent from the field and 40.0 percent from three point range. In the win over Ohio Dominican, Lindstrom grabbed a team high nine rebounds and also added four points and four assists. She then posted a career-high 21 points and added three rebounds and three assists against ODU.

Senior guard Chelsea Harrison helped lead the Hillsdale College women’s basketball team to its first two conference wins of the season last week, averaging 15.0 points and 6.5 assists, and 3.0 rebounds per game and shot 47.8 percent from the field. Harrison led the team with 18 points and seven assists in a key South Division win over Findlay, and then recorded 12 points, six assists, three rebounds, and two steals in the Lake Superior State win. Harrison currently ranks fourth in scoring average in the GLIAC with 16.1 points per game.

Ashland Eagles
The Eagles begin this week with a
seven-game winning streak. The last time the Eagles put together a
seven-game winning streak was in 2005-06. The last time they
enjoyed a winning streak longer than that came in 2004-05 when the
Eagles won eight consecutive games…junior forward Kari
Daugherty (Fresno, Ohio/Dayton) posted career highs in points (29)
and rebounds (16) in last week’s 76-60 win over Lake
Erie…during this seven-game winning streak the Eagles have
had a margin of victory in double digits five times…since
the start of last season AU is 15-2 at Kates Gymnasium…in
three of the last four games, the Eagles have shot 81 percent or
better at the free throw line…redshirt sophomore
guard-forward Ashley Dorner (Bellville, Ohio/Clear Fork) tied her
career high with 18 points in the win over LEC. Dorner also
had nine rebounds in the game.
Ferris State Bulldogs
A strong second half lifted the
Ferris State University women’s basketball squad to a
decisive 70-50 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
(GLIAC) victory over Northwood on Saturday (Dec. 10) afternoon at
the Bennett Sports Center in Midland. Senior guard Tricia Principe
(Kalamazoo/Mattawan) led the Bulldogs with a game-high 21 points in
the contest, including 18 in the opening half. Bulldog sophomore
guard Sarah DeShone (Elkhart,Ind./Jimtown) chipped in with 13
points, nine assists, five rebounds and two steals for FSU. Ferris
State limited Northwood to only 29.6% (16-54) shooting for the day,
including a four-of-16 (25%) effort in the final 20 minutes. Ferris
State’s victory lifted the Bulldogs’ all-time series
edge over Northwood to 48-16 as the win was FSU’s 25th in the
last 29 series’ matchups. FSU also improved to 24-9 all-time
against NU in Midland. Northwood was coming off a 66-59 league home
win over Grand Valley State on Wednesday (Dec. 7) evening. Ferris
State will host Michigan Tech next on Sunday, Dec. 18, with tipoff
set for 1 p.m. (ET) at FSU’s Jim Wink Arena in Big
Rapids. The Bulldogs then face Northern Michigan on Monday,
Dec. 19, in a 5 p.m. (ET) league home tilt to wrap up the
pre-holiday portion of their schedule.
Findlay
Oilers
The Oilers went 1-1 last week as
they lost 71-57 at Hillsdale on Thursday and won 76-50 at home
against Saginaw Valley State on Saturday. Junior forward
Kayla Brown led the Oilers during the week and averaged 13.5 points
and 6.5 rebounds per game. Senior guard Clare Aubry
contributed 15.0 points per game in the two contests. In the
loss to Hillsdale, sophomore guard Ashley Andrews scored a
season-high ten points. In the win over Saginaw Valley State,
sophomore guard Karli Beasley contributed a career-high 11
points.
Grand Valley State Lakers
The Lakers get a weeklong break for finals before hosting two of
the top teams in the North Division, Northern Michigan and Michigan
Tech. GVSU continued its back-and-forth start to the season
going 1-1 on the week at Northwood and Rochester College.
Junior Brittany Taylor continues to lead the team in scoring,
averaging 11.6 points, while Alex Stelfox and Briauna Taylor are
also averaging 10.7 and 10.6 points per contest,
respectively. Stelfox also leads the team in rebounding
(5.9/gm). Senior point guard Jasmine Padin recently moved
into second in the GVSU record book in career assists with
413. The Lakers close out 2011 with a trip to Florida
to face Tampa and Florida Southern after the holiday break.
Hillsdale Chargers
The Hillsdale College women’s
basketball team put together back-to-back wins for the second time
this season, defeating Findlay and Lake Superior State at
home…The Chargers set new season-highs for margin of victory
in each of the games, beating the Oilers by 14, then topping the
Lakers by 33…Saturday’s win over LSSU was the
team’s biggest blowout since defeating Findlay by 40 points
in December 2010…All six of the team’s freshmen earned
career-highs in minutes played against Lake Superior State, with
Kadie Lowery, Megan Fogt, Betsy Bildner, Chelsea Farrell and Abbey
Lovat all setting career highs in scoring…12 different
players scored in the win over the Lakers…Hillsdale is 5-0
when it makes more 3-point baskets than its opponents, and 0-3 when
it makes fewer such shots…Head coach Claudette Charney now
has 488 career victories, leaving her just 12 shy of the lofty mark
of 500 for her career…The Chargers are second in the GLIAC
in free throw percentage and third in scoring
offense…Hillsdale pays its final game before Christmas
Saturday at home vs. Ashland.
Lake Erie Storm
The Storm had their record
seven-game season-opening winning streak snapped at Ashland on
Sunday, 76-60, in its only game last week… Senior
center Stephanie Rogers just missed her fifth double-double of the
season, scoring 18 points and grabbing nine rebounds in the loss.
She also blocked two shots and had three steals on defense…
Jen Caiola added 13 points, the seventh time in eight games she has
reached double figures this season… despite the loss to the
Eagles, the Storm shot a season-best 88.9% (16-of-18) from the foul
line and were 8-of-19 from three-point range. Those are the
second most three’s made is a game for LEC this
season… Lake Erie travels to Northwood on Saturday for its
final game before the Christmas holiday break.
Lake Superior State Lakers
LSSU first-year coach Justin Rees
seeks his first GLIAC win with the Lakers when they take on Saginaw
Valley State on Saturday at Bud Cooper Gymnasium. The Lakers are
0-3 in the GLIAC, including a 73-58 loss at SVSU on Dec. 1. They
played their last seven games on the road and were 2-5 during that
stretch. Junior forward Maria Blazejewski (Beulah, Mich.), who
scored 21 points Saturday at Hillsdale, is ranked second in the
GLIAC in scoring at 18.7 points per game and is 14-of-16 at the
free-throw line in three league contests. Overall, she is averaging
18.4 ppg. Senior center Cassy Schemberger (Park Falls, Wis.) is
ranked second in rebounding at 10.7 rpg.
Michigan Tech. Huskies
Michigan Tech remained undefeated
in conference play with wins over Ohio Dominican (59-42) and Tiffin
(75-59). Junior Sam Hoyt scored a game-high 24 points against
Tiffin and senior Lindsey Lindstrom added a career-high 21 points.
Tiffin’s 59 points were the most that Tech has allowed in
conference play and the second most this season. Tech leads the
league in scoring defense allowing 51.4 points per game. Junior
Emma Veach leads the league in assist-to-turnover margin (+5.0).
Tech will play its first conference road games of the season Sunday
(Dec. 18) at Ferris State and Monday (Dec. 19) at Grand Valley
State.
Northern Michigan Wildcats
The Northern
Michigan women’s basketball team is now 4-5, 1-2 on the
season following a 62-54 loss to Tiffin (Dec. 8) and a 69-50 win
over Ohio Dominican (Dec. 10)…Senior guard Chelsea Lyons led
the Wildcats with 26 points, seven steals and 10 rebounds over the
weekend…Sophomore center Annie Rubendunst scored a career
high 15 points in the win over Ohio Dominican…NMU ranks
fourth in the conference in team defense with an average of 58.0
points per game…The ‘Cats also rank fifth in 3-point
field goal percentage with .348 percent…Senior forward
Hillary Bowling is eighth in the GLIAC in 3-point field goals made
with 19, averaging 2.1 per contest…NMU returns to the road
this week traveling to Grand Valley State on (Dec. 18).
Northwood Timberwolves
Northwood went 1-1 last week,
downing Grand Valley State 66-59 before falling to Ferris State
70-50 … the Timberwolves are now 6-3 overall, 2-2 in the
GLIAC … NU had won its first six home games of the season
prior to Saturday’s loss to Ferris State … Northwood
has now won three in a row and four of five against Grand Valley
State … the Timberwolves trailed GVSU by seven (55-48) with
less than five minutes remaining in the game, but NU finished the
game on an 18-4 run to earn the win … the Northwood
men’s team also defeated GVSU that night, giving NU its first
sweep over the Lakers in a GLIAC doubleheader since November 28,
2001 … Rachel Church (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek) and
Savannah Stedman (Ortonville, Mich./Brandon) each averaged 15.0
points per game to lead the way for the Northwood offense …
Northwood will host Lake Erie Saturday (December 17).
Ohio Dominican Panthers
ODU suffered its first two road
losses of the season, both to GLIAC foes in the Upper Peninsula, as
the Panthers fell to No. 8 Michigan Tech 59-42 on Thursday evening
and to Northern Michigan 69-50 on Saturday afternoon. ODU gave Tech
a scare, leading throughout most of the first, outshooting the
Huskies 40 percent (10-of-25) to 37 percent including 45.5 percent
(5-of-11) to 27 percent from three-point territory. However, the
Panthers only mustered two field goals in the second, hitting just
one of their first 15 shots en route to a 2-of-18 effort. Similar
to Thursday, ODU found its leading for much of the opening frame,
but a 20-5 Wildcat run spanning the closing minutes of the first
and the start of the second half was too much to overcome as NMU
connected on 20 of its final 36 shots. Sophomore Christina Pentaudi
(Dayton, OH) led the Panthers with 10.0 ppg off the bench, hitting
on 7-of-18 shots and 6-of-12 from three-point territory. Despite an
off week, senior Abby Glover (Centerville, OH) remains the team
leader in both points (12.5 ppg) and rebounds (9.5 rpg), good for
17th and third, respectively in the GLIAC. Sophomore Katelyn
Stuckey (Millersburg, OH) ran her free throw streak to 21 straight
and is now 35-of-39 (89.7 percent), good for fourth in the
conference. The Panthers remain on the road next week as ODU will
take on Wayne State at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 15 in Detroit
and Findlay at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
Saginaw Valley State Cardinals
The Saginaw Valley State University
women’s basketball team dropped all three of their games last
week to fall to 2-6 overall on the season and 1-3 in the Great
Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. They fell 62-55 to
Madonna on Monday (Dec. 5), 59-52 to Wayne State on Thursday (Dec.
8) and 76-50 to Findlay on Saturday (Dec. 10) afternoon.
Cheritee Green averaged 8.7 ppg and 7.3 rpg, while Kristen Greene
averaged 8.3 points and 4.3 rebounds per game last
week. For the season, Jasmine Woods is leading SVSU in
scoring at 10.3 ppg. The Cardinals are averaging 57.4 point
per contest this season. SVSU has outrebounded their
opponents in 7-of-8 games this season, and hold a +40 rebound
margin over the opposition in 2011-12. The Cardinals are also
shooting .729 (121-for-166) from the free throw line on the season,
making more free throws than what have been attempted by their
opponents. Saginaw Valley will play just one contest this
week, traveling to Lake Superior State University on Dec. 17 for a
1:00 PM tip.
Tiffin Dragons
Jessica Harris led the Dragons to a
1-1 week, saving her best game for a 75-59 loss at 8th-ranked
Michigan Tech. Harris totaled 20 points with 8 rebounds against the
Huskies, and averaged 13 ppg for the week with 6 rebounds per game.
She also shot 55 percent from the floor and 80 percent from the
free throw line… Tiffin University used a smothering first
half defense to amass a huge halftime lead, eventually leading to a
62-54 victory at Northern Michigan. Nine different Dragons scored
in the game, with Stephanie Kelly leading the way with 11 points
while Holly Focke and Karli Mast also reaching double figures with
10 points each. Mandy Jaeb and Jennifer Johnston also had 7 points
apiece…In the loss to the Huskies, Karli Mast had 15 points
while Mandy Jaeb added 9 points. Holly Focke also had 7 points with
6 rebounds...…Mast now has 691 career points, 24th on
TU’s career scoring list….Jaeb now has 1307 career
points, moving into fourth all-time for TU. She passed Laura Goins,
and is right behind Brienne Beaschler for third place (1309
points). Jaeb also has 123 career treys, fourth all-time for TU.
She trails third-place Leanne Lucius’s total of
148…Jessica Harris is now second all-time for the Dragons in
per game rebounding average with 8.4. She has 501 rebounds in 59
career games.
Wayne State Warriors
Wayne State
began the home portion of its league schedule with a seven-point
win over Saginaw Valley … senior Stefani Munro (Harrison
Twp., Mich. / Mount Clemens) led the Warriors with 15 points and
four assists … sophomore Chloe Srebernak (Grosse Pointe,
Mich. / South) nearly had a double-double with nine points and
eight rebounds … WSU trailed by four with 7:15 left and
outscored the Cardinals 20-9 down the stretch … junior
center Juanita Cochran (Saginaw, Mich. / Arthur Hill) had a monster
game Saturday at St. Joseph’s with 28 points and 23 rebounds,
the most by a WSU player since Marie Doss amassed a school-record
26 rebounds against Northwood on Feb. 22, 1986 … it was the
10th 20-plus rebound game in program history.
