BAY CITY, Mich. - Ferris State University sophomore guard Sarah DeShone (Elkhart, Ind./Jimtown) and Ashland University junior guard/forward Kari Daugherty (Fresno, Ohio/Dayton) have been chosen as the GLIAC Women's Basketball North and South Division "Players of the Week", respectively.

Sophomore Sarah DeShone averaged 18.5 points and shot 52 percent (13-25) from the floor as the Bulldogs won a pair of league home games this past week to head into the holiday break in first place in the GLIAC North Division standings. DeShone tallied a game-high 24 points as FSU upset nationally seventh-ranked Michigan Tech. She added a team-high 13 points in a 54-38 league home triumph over Northern Michigan. DeShone added five assists, five rebounds and five steals in the two games combined.

Junior Kari Daugherty led the Eagles in two wins over Hillsdale and Northwood. Daugherty had a team-high 27 points, nine rebounds, and four assists at Hillsdale. Against Northwood she recorded 23 points, eight rebounds, and three assists. For the week, she averaged 25.0 points, 8.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 1.5 blocks per game, and shot 69.2 percent from the floor and 50 percent from three-point range. Daugherty currently is fourth in Division II in scoring (22.4 ppg.) and leads the GLIAC in rebounding (10.4 rpg.).

Ashland Eagles
The Eagles have a nine-game winning
streak. This is the program’s longest winning streak since
the 1996-97 team won 12 straight games. AU is 5-0 in conference
play for the first time since 1996-97…in last
Saturday’s game at Hillsdale, sophomore guard-forward Ashley
Dorner (Bellville, Ohio/Clear Fork) had a career-high 16 rebounds.
She followed that up by scoring a career-best 25 points at
Northwood. Dorner averaged 20.0 ppg., 11.0 rpg., and shot 65.3
percent from the field last week…junior forward Kari
Daugherty (Fresno, Ohio/Dayton) is fourth in the country in scoring
(23.2 ppg.) and 24th in rebounding (10.7 rpg.). In two games
last week she averaged 25.0 ppg., shot 69.2 percent from the floor
and averaged 8.5 rpg., 3.5 apg., and 1.5 blocks per
game…senior guard Jena Stutzman (Berlin, Ohio/Kent State) is
14th in the nation in three-point field goals per game (3.1).
The Eagles are sixth in the nation in field goal percentage (46.7),
14th in assists (18.0 apg.), 22nd in assist-turnover ratio (1.06)
and 23rd in scoring (76.8 ppg.) and scoring margin (16.1)…in
the last three games, sophomore point guard Alyssa Miller
(Zanesville, Ohio/Dresden) has 20 assists and nine
turnovers…the Eagles are idle until they host Walsh on Dec.
30. AU is 5-0 at home this season.
Ferris State Bulldogs
The Ferris State University
women’s basketball squad moved into first place in the GLIAC
North Division standings heading into the holiday break with a pair
of league home wins this past week at Jim Wink Arena. The
Bulldogs upset nationally seventh-ranked Michigan Tech by a 71-56
count to open the homestand on Sunday (Dec. 18) before posting a
54-38 win over Northern Michigan on Monday (Dec. 19). FSU is
currently 6-2 overall and has won four-straight outings to date.
The Bulldogs also own a 4-1 GLIAC record. Sunday’s home win
represented the second consecutive year in which the Bulldogs have
upset a nationally-ranked MTU squad in Big Rapids as FSU handed the
Huskies their only league loss last campaign at Wink Arena before
beating them again this year. Ferris State trailed MTU by three
points at halftime, but outscored the Huskies 39-21 over the final
20 minutes to earn the win. Ferris State returns to action after
the Christmas holiday against Indianapolis on Dec. 30. Tipoff at
Jim Wink Arena is set for 1 p.m. (EDT).
Findlay
Oilers
The Oilers went 1-1 last week at home, losing 74-65 to Tiffin on Thursday and winning 78-56 against Ohio Dominican on Saturday. They also claimed a 72-66 win on the road Monday night against Cedarville. In the loss to the Dragons, red-shirt freshman forward Carlay Stahl came off the bench to contribute a season-high 12 points. In the win over the Panthers, junior forward Kayla Brown led the team with 16 points and five rebounds. Sophomore guard Saira House stuffed the stat sheet with nine points, seven steals and six assists. In the win over the Yellow Jackets, Brown again led the team with a season-high 20 points on 7-of-9 shooting to go along with five steals and four rebounds. On the season, Brown leads the team with averages of 13.9 points and 5.3 rebounds per game.
Grand Valley State Lakers
GVSU dropped a tightly contested game against Northern Michigan
on Sunday afternoon, but picked up a win over No. 7 Michigan Tech
on Monday. The loss against the Wildcats snapped a three-game home
winning streak, but the Lakers continued their win-loss
trend. GVSU has used seven different line ups this season,
but have not found one that works perfectly. However, the starting
line up gets some much-needed assistance from off the bench as GVSU
non-starters are outscoring their opponents, 190-118 this
season. Senior Jasmine Padin is now just 50 assists away from
the top spot in the GVSU career record book. GVSU now travels south
after the holidays to face Florida Southern (Dec. 29) and Tampa
(Dec. 30). It will be the second and final time that GVSU
plays back-to-back contests.
Hillsdale Chargers
The Hillsdale College women’s
basketball team nearly rallied from a 22-point second-half deficit,
but lost at home to Ashland 85-78 Saturday…The series
between the Eagles and Chargers has featured a sweep by one team or
another in nine of the past 10 years, with 2010-11 the only time
the teams split their two meetings…Sophomore forward Angela
Bisaro scored Hillsdale’s first 8 points in the game and
finished with a career-high 22…Three different players have
registered 20-point games for the Chargers this
season…Senior Chelsea Harrison has 205 3-point field goals
in her career and is just 28 away from breaking the school’s
all-time record of 232, set by Ann Iciek in 1997…Hillsdale
is now off until it takes on two talented teams, Edinboro and
Northern Kentucky, at NKU Dec. 29-30.
Lake Erie Storm
The Storm won its only game last
week, bouncing back from its first defeat of the season with an
81-78 win at Northwood on Saturday night… Cate
Cianchetti, making her first career start, scored 24 points and had
seven assists – both career highs- in the win. She hit two
free throws with 18 seconds to go to clinch the win… Lake
Erie hit a season-high 13 three-pointers as a team.
Cianchetti and Britt Busson (12 points) had four each while Liz
Stephens hit a pair… Taylor Rogers scored 10 points off the
bench for Lake Erie . She also had four rebounds and three assists
without a turnover… the Storm committed a season-low nine
turnovers in the win… Lake Erie has already surpassed last
year’s conference win total. The Storm was just 2-17 in
league play a year ag0 but is 3-1 this year… LEC is idle
until Dec. 28 when it plays at Division I Cleveland State in its
annual holiday break game with the Vikings.
Lake Superior State Lakers
LSSU first-year coach Justin Rees
garnered his first GLIAC win during Saturday’s 69-51 home
victory over Saginaw Valley State, which avenged a 15-point road
loss on Dec. 1 and snapped a three-game losing skid. Senior center
Cassy Schemberger (Park Falls, Wis.) tied her season highs by
totaling 17 points and 13 rebounds. She scored 11 of her 13
second-half points during a second-half opening 18-4 run. It was
Schemberger’s third double double of the season. Junior
forward Maria Blazejewski (Beulah, Wis.) finished with 19 points
and five assists. In GLIAC play, Blazejewski is ranked second in
scoring (18.8 ppg), while Schemberger is second in rebounding (11.3
rpg). LSSU totaled 10 team blocks against SVSU, which ties a GLIAC
single-game high for 2011-12. Saturday’s contest ended a
string of seven straight road games. The Lakers play their next
four games at home, beginning Jan. 5 against Ferris State.
Michigan Tech. Huskies
Michigan Tech dropped a pair of
conference games at Ferris State (71-56) and Grand Valley State
(66-40). The last time Tech lost back-to-back games was Feb. 7 and
12, 2009. Tech struggled shooting the ball over the weekend
shooting under 30-percent over its last three halves of basketball.
Junior Sam Hoyt scored a team-high 20 points against Ferris State.
She ranks ninth in the league with 14.1 points per game and ninth
in steals with 2.0 per game. The Huskies lead the league in scoring
defense allowing just 54.8 points per game. Tech will play its
final non-conference game of the year vs Lewis at Portland (Mich.)
High School.
Northern Michigan Wildcats
The Northern
Michigan women’s basketball team is now 5-6, 2-3 on the
season following a 54-52 win over Grand Valley State (Dec. 18) and
a 54-38 loss to Ferris State (Dec. 19)…Senior forward
Hillary Bowling led the Wildcats with 27 points and 6 rebounds over
the weekend…Bowling shot 57.2 percent from field over the
weekend and 57.1 percent beyond the arc... NMU ranks third in the
conference in team defense with an average of 57.4 points per
game…The ‘Cats also rank fifth in 3-point field goal
percentage with .352 percent…Senior forward Hillary Bowling
is fifth in the GLIAC in 3-point field goals made with 23,
averaging 2.3 per contest…NMU is off for the holiday break
until Dec. 28 when it hosts Finlandia University in a
non-conference matchup.
Northwood Timberwolves
Northwood went 0-2 last week,
dropping an 81-78 contest to Lake Erie Saturday before falling to
No. 25 Ashland 95-52 … the Timberwolves are now 6-5 overall,
2-4 in the GLIAC … NU’s opponents had strong weeks
offensively, shooting 54.3 percent from the floor (69-127) and 48.9
percent from 3-point range (23-47) … Savannah Stedman
(Ortonville, Mich./Brandon) led the way for Northwood, averaging
17.0 points and 8.0 rebounds per game … she had 23 points
and 10 rebounds against Lake Erie, which was her seventh
double-double of the season … Northwood will return to
action December 29 at the Findlay Tournament, taking on Malone and
Missouri S & T.
Ohio Dominican Panthers
The Panthers’ road woes
continued last week as ODU dropped a pair of games against South
Division foes Wayne State, 74-56, on Thursday and Findlay, 78-56,
on Saturday. After beginning the year 5-0 and 3-0 on the road, the
Panthers have lost five straight, all to GLIAC opponents, including
four away from home. After a loss to the Warriors, ODU struggled to
find its offensive rhythm as the Panthers committed a season-worst
29 turnovers, allowing the Oilers to cruise to the wire-to-wire
victory. Senior Abby Glover (Centerville, OH) averaged a
double-double for the week with 12.0 ppg and 11 rebounds in each
contest. With a game-high 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting at Findlay,
she currently leads the team and ranks second in the GLIAC in both
double-doubles (4) and double-digit rebounding efforts (6).
Classmate Meredith Fox (Springboro, OH) added 10.5 ppg for the
week, including 12 on Saturday, while sophomore Christina Pentaudi
(Dayton, OH) continued to lead the Panthers’ bench, averaging
8.0 ppg and 4.0 rpg. ODU has a 12-day layoff for the holiday break
before returning to the hardwood on Thursday, Dec. 29 as it takes
part in the two-day Northern Kentucky Classic. The Panthers take on
host NKU at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday and finish the event with a clash
against current No. 8 Edinboro (Pa.) at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
Saginaw Valley State Cardinals
The Cardinals fell in their only
contest of the week at Lake Superior State University by a score of
69-51 on Saturday (Dec. 17). SVSU is now 2-7 overall on the
season and 1-3 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference. Jasmine Woods is leading Saginaw Valley in
scoring at 10.6 ppg, while Grace Herzog is pulling down 6.8
rebounds to lead the team. As a team, the Cardinals are averaging
56.7 points per contest this season. They have also
outrebounded their opponents in 7-of-9 games this season, and hold
a +20 rebound margin over the opposition in 2011-12. The
Cardinals are also shooting .733 (132-for-180) from the free throw
line in 2011-12. Saginaw Valley will play two contests over
the holiday break at the St. Edward’s New Year’s
Classic in Austin, Tx. on Dec.30 and 31.
Tiffin Dragons
Mandy Jaeb led the Dragons to a 2-1
week, including posting a triple-double in a 74-65 win at Findlay,
TU’s first victory at Findlay since 2004-05. Jaeb totaled 11
points, 10 rebounds, and 11 assists in the victory. She then led TU
to another GLIAC win at Wayne State with 12 points and 6 assists
before leading the Dragons with 10 points in a loss against
Northern Kentucky. Overall she averaged 11 ppg, 4.6 rpg, and 6.6
assists per game for the week while shooting a perfect 12-for-12
from the line…Karli Mast now has 729 career points, 22nd on
TU’s career scoring list. She trails Sarah Pitson by 15
points for 21st place….Jaeb now has 1340 career points,
moving into third all-time for TU. She passed Brienne Beaschler for
third place (1309 points) and now trails Susan Miller for second
place with 1448 points. Jaeb also has 126 career treys, fourth
all-time for TU. She trails third-place Leanne Lucius’s total
of 148…Jessica Harris is now second all-time for the Dragons
in per game rebounding average with 8.4. She has 523 rebounds in 62
career games.
Wayne State Warriors
Wayne State
concluded its pre-holiday schedule with a home split last
week. Graduate Student Stefani Munro (Harrison Twp.,
Mich./Mount Clemens) recorded the first triple-double in WSU
women’s basketball history in the win over Ohio Dominican
with 11 points, 10 assists and 13 rebounds. She averaged 15.0
points, 9.0 assists and 7.5 rebounds in the Warriors’ two
games last week. Munro has scored in double figures in seven
straight games. Junior center Juanita Cochran (Saginaw,
Mich./Arthur Hill) contributed 22 points and 24 rebounds last week,
while junior forward Phaebre Colbert (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest
Hills Northern) added 36 points and 27 rebounds. WSU will
conclude the non-league portion of its schedule with a pair of home
games over the holidays as St. Joseph’s (Dec. 29) and
Southern Indiana (Dec. 30) visit the Matthaei for 5:30 p.m.
tip-offs. The Warriors resume GLIAC play with a pair of road
games at Hillsdale (Jan. 5) and Findlay (Jan. 7).
