BAY CITY, Mich. - Wayne State senior center Shareta Brown has been selected 2014-15 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Women's Basketball Player of the Year in voting conducted by the league's head coaches. Ashland forward Andi Daugherty was selected GLIAC Freshman of the Year, while Michigan Tech's Kim Cameron earned Coach of the Year accolades after leading the Huskies to the conference title.
Wayne State's Shareta Brown leads the nation in total rebounds per game (14.4) and offensive rebounds per game (6.0) while ranking second in the country in field goal percentage (64.5) and fourth in scoring (22.5 ppg). Brown scored at least 12 points in every game this year, posted 19 20-point contests and five 30-point games. For the season, she has 22 double-doubles and one triple-double. Her 24-point, 16-rebound and 10-assist performance vs. Findlay on Feb. 2 was just the second triple-double in program history. Brown also led the GLIAC in league points (508), points per game (23.1) and points per 40 minutes (30.1), while ranking fourth with 43 steals.
The senior center was an eight-time GLIAC South Division Player of the Week selection including a two-time USBWA National Player of the Week honoree. Brown becomes the second student-athlete in program history to win the conference player of the year award joining 1983-84 recipient Lori Januszkiewicz.
Ashland's Andi Daugherty is part of the Eagles' talent-rich 2014-15 freshman class, and provided the team with versatility on both ends of the floor. She started all 28 games for Ashland during the regular season, averaging 11.9 points, 8.5 rebounds, 1.5 blocks and 2.0 assists per game. Daugherty shot 47.9 percent from the field and 69.1 percent from the free-throw line during the regular year.
Daugherty, a 6-foot-1 forward, finished the regular season tied for fifth in the GLIAC in rebounding and tied for third in blocked shots per game. She turned in her best performances as a rookie against the top teams in the country, averaging 19.0 points, 10.7 rebounds and 2.3 blocks in three games against then-nationally-ranked teams, and earning the AU program's sixth 20-20 game (21 points, 20 rebounds) on Dec. 4 at home against GLIAC Tournament qualifier Grand Valley State.
Michigan Tech head coach Kim Cameron was named GLIAC Coach of the Year for the second time after guiding the Huskies to a 20-2 mark in league play, the GLIAC North Division title and the top seed in the GLIAC Tournament. Cameron's Huskies have been nationally ranked since Dec. 16 including each of the last three weeks in the top 10. Tech is 25-2 overall heading into the GLIAC Tournament semifinals with a 14-0 mark at home.
Cameron, in her fifth year as Tech's head coach, owns a 116-30 record (.795 winning percentage) with three GLIAC North titles. She was last named GLIAC Coach of the Year in 2010-11, a year that saw the Huskies finish as national runners-up.
