Four GLIAC Women's Basketball Student-Athletes Named CoSIDA Academic All-District

BAY CITY, Mich - Four Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) student-athletes were named to the 2014-15 CoSIDA Academic All-District Four Team for women's basketball at the NCAA Division II level on Thursday (Feb. 11).

Ohio Dominican senior Melissa Scherpenberg has maintained a 3.88 grade-point average while studying early childhood education in Columbus. Scherpenberg ranks second in the GLIAC with 10.7 rebounds per contest and fifth in field goal percentage (53.0), while sitting eighth in blocked shots per game (1.3).

Ohio Dominican junior Lauren Bates has amassed an impressive 3.98 grade-point average majoring in exercise science. Bates has been a key contributor for the Panthers averaging 12.6 points per contest, 5.7 rebounds and three assists per game.

Ashland sophomore Andi Daugherty is a finance major with a 3.93 GPA as one of the top players in the conference. Daugherty is fourth in the league in points per game (15.6) and ninth in rebounds (7.4) for the Eagles who are ranked No. 6 in the country.

Saginaw Valley junior Emily Wendling leads the league in scoring with a 18.9 points per game average as well as a league-best 56.8 field goal percentage, while also ranking fourth in rebounds per game (9.8). Wendling shines in the classroom to the tune of a 3.88 grade-point average in the field of occupational therapy.

To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic AllAmerica honors on more than 20,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
