BAY CITY, Mich. - Ashland junior forward Laina Snyder has been selected 2016-17 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Women's Basketball Player of the Year in voting conducted by the league's head coaches. Snyder's fellow AU teammate Jodi Johnson was selected GLIAC Freshman of the Year, while Ashland's Robyn Fralick earned Coach of the Year accolades after guiding the Eagles to an unbeaten 28-0 regular season campaign for the first time in school history.
Ashland's Laina Snyder finished the regular season averaging 17.7 points, 9.2 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 3.2 steals and 1.4 blocks per game, while hitting 51.3 percent from the field and 79.4 percent from the free-throw line. She led the GLIAC during the regular year in rebounding and steals, while finishing tied for sixth in assists and fourth in blocks. Snyder earned six GLIAC South Player of the Week awards this season.
Ashland guard Jodi Johnson ended the regular year third on the team at 12.0 points per game, while also going for 4.9 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.7 steals per contest. She hit 53.2 percent from the field and 84.8 percent from the foul line, good for fifth in the conference. Johnson finished the regular season with a career-high 20 points at home against Tiffin on Feb. 23.
Ashland head coach Robyn Fralick is 2-for-2 in winning GLIAC Coach of the Year honors, as she also won in her first season guiding the Eagles in 2015-16. In 2016-17, she led Ashland to an undefeated regular season (28-0) for the first time, to the first 20-0 GLIAC regular season, the program's fourth regular-season conference title in the last six years and its sixth GLIAC South championship in the last seven seasons.
