Ashland's Snyder Selected 2017 D2CCA All-Region Player of the Year; GLIAC Lands Four Honorees

ASHLAND, Ohio — Ashland junior forward Laina Snyder has been named the Division II Conference Commissioners' Association Women's Basketball Midwest Region Player of the Year in a vote by the region's sports information directors. The GLIAC landed three first-team honorees and one second-team selection.

Snyder, the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year, averaged 16.8 points and 8.9 rebounds per game to lead the Eagles to the NCAA Division II Midwest Region title. This marks the second straight year Snyder has been named first-team All-Region.

She is joined on the All-Midwest Region first team by AU teammate Andi Daugherty (Fresno, Ohio), Lewis University senior guard Jamie Johnson (South Holland, Illinois) and sophomore forward Jessica Kelliher (Waukesha, Wisconsin), and Saginaw Valley State University senior forward Emily Wendling (Flushing, Michigan).

Like Snyder, Daugherty and Wendling earn first-team All-Midwest Region honors for the second straight season, while Johnson is earning first-team All-Region honors for the second time in three years after sitting out the 2015-16 season with an injury. Wendling was the Midwest Region Player of the Year in 2016, while Kelliher, a second-team honoree a year ago, was named the 2017 Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Year after averaging 19.7 points and 7.6 rebounds per game.

Players listed on the All-Midwest Region first team advance to the national ballot for All-America consideration.

The Division II Conference Commissioners’ Association All-Midwest Region second team consists of Michigan Tech University senior guard Morgan Anderson (De Pere, Wisconsin), Rockhurst University senior guard Mary Dineen (Omaha, Nebraska), Bellarmine University senior forward Sarah Galvin (Hendersonville, Tennessee), Drury University junior guard Heather Harman (Walnut Grove, Missouri), and University of Southern Indiana senior guard Tanner Marcum (New Albany, Indiana).

This marks the second straight year that Galvin has earned All-Midwest Region accolades after earning first-team honors a year ago, while Anderson, Dineen, Harman and Marcum find themselves on the All-Midwest Region team for the first time. Harman led the Panthers to their second straight runner-up finish at the NCAA II Midwest Regional.

Ashland will represent the Midwest Region at the NCAA II Elite Eight March 21-24 in Columbus, Ohio.
