2017 NCAA DIVISION II WOMEN'S BASKETBALL MIDWEST REGIONAL
BAY CITY, Mich. -- The field for the 2017 NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Championship kicked off on Friday (March 10) with three Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) programs collecting victory in the Midwest Regional in Ashland.
GAME 1: No. 3 Saginaw Valley 70 def. No. 6 Lewis 66 - BOX SCORE
RECAP: Saginaw Valley led by as many as 14 points in the second half before staving off a late Lewis surge to clinch a spot in the Round of 32. SVSU was big at the charity stripe throughout the contest especially down the stretch to close out the game going 26-for-28 from the line. Katelyn Carriere led all scorers with a game-high 22 points, while Halee Nieman and Emily Wendling added 14 points each in the victory.
GAME 2: No. 2 Drury 75 def. No. 7 Bellarmine 57 - BOX SCORE
GAME 3: No. 1 Ashland 72 def. No. 8 Malone 40 - BOX SCORE
RECAP: Top-ranked Ashland held Malone to just 1-of-12 shooting in the first quarter to take an early 25-8 advantage as the Eagles never looked back and held the Pioneers to just 17.2 percent shooting on the afternoon. AU outrebounded MU by a 55-37 margin and won the points in the paint battle, 42-6. Nine Eagles enter the scoring column led by Andi Daugherty's 15 points and eight rebounds as Ashland moves to a perfect 32-0 on the year.
GAME 4: No. 5 Grand Valley State 73 def. No. 4 Ursuline 66 - BOX SCORE
RECAP: Grand Valley State held Ursuline scoreless for the final 5:10 of the first quarter amidst a 14-0 run for the Lakers to lead 22-10 in the early stages of the second quarter would never relinquish the lead. The GVSU lead was cut to four after the third quarter but GVSU withstood the Arrows comeback for the victory. The Lakers outrebounded Ursuline 47-32 and also received 23 points from their bench. Piper Tucker led the Lakers with 17 points and five boards on 7-of-11 shooting, while Taylor Parmley added 13 points and eight rebounds.
