Ashland Wins 2017 NCAA Midwest Region Championship; Elite Eight Bound!

2017 NCAA DIVISION II WOMEN'S BASKETBALL MIDWEST REGIONAL

BAY CITY, Mich. -- The top-seed Ashland Eagles moved to 34-0 on the year and captured the 2017 NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Championships Midwest Regional Championship on Monday (March 13) with a 74-62 victory over No. 2 Drury to advance to the Elite Eight in Columbus beginning next Tuesday (March 21) on the campus of Ohio Dominican University.

The Eagles were rewarded with the No. 1 seed after reseeding took place following the regional championship games. Ashland will face No. 8 West Texas A&M at 6:00 PM next Tuesday (March).

RECAP: Ashland forced eight Drury turnovers in the first ten minutes of action to take a 16-11 lead, while Drury outrebounded AU by a 14-7 margin. Neither team gained much momentum in the second quarter as the Eagles took maintained their five-point lead into the halftime break. Both teams exploded offensively in the third quarter where AU extended its lead to nine points. Ashland recorded more points in the first three minutes (14) of the third than they tallied in the entire second quarter (13). In the fourth and final quarter, Drury cut it to a couple but Ashland was too much and advance to the Elite Eight in Columbus.

GLIAC Freshman of the Year Jodi Johnson paced the Eagles with 15 points, seven rebounds and seven assists with Julie Worley coming off the bench for drop in 13 points and pull down six boards. The Eagles will play in their third NCAA Division II Elite Eight in the last six seasons.
