GVSU's Boensch, WSU's Chambers Awarded GLIAC Hoops Weekly Honors

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced weekly women's basketball awards following the first weekend of the new calendar year. Grand Valley State sophomore center Cassidy Boensch earned GLIAC Women's Basketball North Division honors, while Wayne State sophomore guard Nastassja Chambers captured South Division accolades.


NORTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Cassidy Boensch, Grand Valley State 

Grand Valley State sophomore center Cassidy Boensch averaged 14.3 points, six rebounds, and 4.3 blocks in three victories for the Lakers, who are now winners of six straight contests. Boensch shot 62.5% from the floor on the weekend, including a 7-10 game against Cornerstone that saw her score a career-high 18 points while also picking up a career-best seven blocks. Boensch followed that game up with a 16 point, five rebound, four block performance against GLIAC opponent Northwood before scoring nine points and picking up six rebounds in a victory over Saginaw Valley State. On the season, Boensch is shooting 57.5%, which ranks third in the GLIAC.


SOUTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Nastassja Chambers, Wayne State

Wayne State sophomore guard Nastassja Chambers averaged 21.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.5 steals per game as WSU won twice last week. Chambers had game-high totals of 26 points, six assists, and four steals in the win at Ferris State along with tying for game-high rebounding honors with 13 boards. In the second quarter against the Bulldogs, her old-fashioned three-point play tied the game at 29-29 and started an 8-0 rally from which WSU never trailed. Chambers tallied 12 points in the third period and added four points and four rebounds in the fourth stanza. She had game-high totals of 17 points and three steals in the victory over LSSU. Against the Lakers, she had four points in the first period and chipped in eight points in the second quarter. For the week, Chambers shot 63 percent (19-of-30) from the floor, and made her only three point attempt.
