MTU's Welsh and WSU's Miller earn women's basketball weekly awards

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference has announced women's basketball player of the week honors for Week Six of the 2018-19 season. Michigan Tech guard Ellie Welsh was named GLIAC Women's Basketball North Division Player of the Week, while Wayne State guard Alexis Miller captured South Division honors.


NORTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Ellie Welsh - Michigan Tech

Ellie Welsh, a junior, matched a career high with 15 points during Saturday's 65-51 loss to No. 20 Lewis University. Welsh was 5-for-5 from the field and a perfect 4-for-4 from three-point range. Welsh also contributed an offensive rebound and had two assists in the contest. Welsh is averaging 6.8 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 2.8 assists through the first 11 games this season. She has connected on 48.1 percent of her field goals and 43.2 percent of her attempts from behind the three-point arc.


SOUTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Alexis Miller - Wayne State

Freshman Alexis Miller helped lead the Warriors to a 65-56 road victory at Central State by scoring a team-high 18 points, along with a game-leading six assists. In the decisive third quarter, she connected on back-to-back triples to turn a two-point deficit into a four-point advantage. Later in the period, Miller had a key assist and a bucket. In the fourth stanza with WSU leading by four, she again drained a three-pointer to increase the lead to seven. With just over five minutes remaining in the game and WSU ahead by four points, Miller hit her fourth triple of the game and eventual game-winning points. In the last minute of the game, MIller had a key assist then sealed the victory with a pair of free throws. She was 6-of-9 from the field overall, including 4-of-4 from three-point range.
