Northern Michigan's Smith and Northwood's Taylor receive women's basketball Week 8 awards

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference has announced women's basketball player of the week honors for Week Eight of the 2018-19 season. Northern Michigan guard/forward Lexi Smith was named GLIAC Women's Basketball North Division Player of the Week, while Northwood guard Ellie Taylor captured South Division honors.


NORTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Lexi Smith - Northern Michigan

Sophomore guard/forward Lexi Smith led the team in scoring with 15.5 points as the Wildcats defeated Wayne State but fell to No. 8 Ashland in GLIAC action. At WSU, the Smith posted 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds. At Ashland she tallied 19 points while compiling five rebounds. Smith finished the weekend shooting 54 percent (7-of-13) from the field while averaging 27 minutes per game. She was 11-of-12 at the free-throw line.


SOUTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Ellie Taylor - Northwood

Sophomore guard Ellie Taylor led Northwood in scoring in all three games over the last two weeks. Overall, she averaged 15.7 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.0 assists. In her two GLIAC contests, both of which Northwood won, Taylor averaged 19.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists. In those wins over Parkside and Purdue Northwest, she shot 50.0 percent from the floor and 45.0 percent from three-point range. She compiled 24 points and five rebounds at Parkside, and 15 points, four rebounds and four assists at home against PNW.
