NMU's Smith and Ashland's Loomis are women's basketball Week 10 top players

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference has announced women's basketball player of the week honors for Week 10 of the 2018-19 season. Northern Michigan sophomore guard/forward Lexi Smith was named GLIAC Women's Basketball North Division Player of the Week, while Ashland junior forward Sara Loomis captured South Division honors.


NORTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Lexi Smith - Northern Michigan

Sophomore guard/forward Lexi Smith scored 21 points to help Northern Michigan upset No. 9 Grand Valley State Saturday and move into a tie atop the GLIAC Standings. In the game, Smith finished 10-for-17 and shot 58.8 percent from the field. On Thursday she tallied 16 points and tied a career-high with nine rebounds during a 69-61 victory over Davenport. For the week, she shot 52 percent from the field while averaging 18.5 points per game. She also dished out 2.5 points per game and snagged 5.5 rebounds. She committed only one turnover for the week while garnering her second player of the week honor.


SOUTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Sara Loomis - Ashland

During two home wins last week for the No. 6-ranked Ashland Eagles, junior forward Sara Loomis averaged 19.5 points, 12.0 rebounds and 7.0 blocked shots per game, while shooting 65.2 percent from the field and 88.9 percent from the free-throw line. Loomis posted 19 points, 10 rebounds and six blocks to lead AU to an 83-60 win over Saginaw Valley State Thursday. The three-time GLIAC Player of the Week honoree compiled 20 points, 14 boards and eight rejections in a 98-65 victory over Northwood on Saturday.
