MTU's Botz and GVSU's Boensch receive Week 13 women's basketball accolades

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference has announced women's basketball player of the week honors for Week 13 of the 2018-19 season. Michigan Tech junior forward Abbie Botz was named GLIAC Women's Basketball North Division Player of the Week, while Grand Valley State junior center Cassidy Boensch captured South Division honors for the second straight week.


NORTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Abbie Botz - Michigan Tech

Junior forward Abbie Botz (Little Chute, Wis.) led the Huskies to a pair of key GLIAC wins over Northwood and Saginaw Valley State. Botz averaged 19.5 points per game and scored a career-high 22 points in the 79-54 victory over SVSU. She opened the week with a 17-point performance during a 70-40 win over Northwood. Botz converted 65.4 percent of her shots from the field (17-26) and was a perfect 4-for-4 at the free-throw line in the two games. Botz also matched a career high with 17 rebounds in the Saginaw Valley State contest, marking her fourth double-double of the season. She pulled down seven rebounds on Thursday night against the Timberwolves. Botz leads the Huskies in both scoring and rebounding this season thanks to an 11.3 points per game scoring average and an 8.2 rebounds per game average in 2018-19. He rebound totals are seventh best in the GLIAC.


SOUTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Cassidy Boensch - Grand Valley State

Junior center Cassidy Boensch (Au Gres, Mich.) averaged 22.0 points on 72.7 percent shooting and 10.5 rebounds to help GVSU to wins over Purdue Northwest and Parkside. She scored 18 points and pulled down eight rebounds during an 84-36 victory over the Pride. Boensch totaled 26 points and 13 rebounds as the Lakers beat the Rangers, 84-51. She scored her 1000th career point against Parkside, becoming the 24th Laker to do so, and had seven blocks on the weekend. Boensch leads the GLIAC in overall scoring, averaging 19.8 ppg, and ranks second in rebounding (12.0 rpg) and field-goal percentage (58.8).
