UWP's Nelson, AU's Johnson Claim Women's Basketball Weekly Honors

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference has announced weekly awards following the ninth week of the 2019-20 season. For the second straight week, Parkside sophomore guard Alyssa Nelson earned GLIAC Women's Basketball North Division Player of the Week honors, while Ashland senior guard Jodi Johnson captured South Division Player of the Week.

NORTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Alyssa Nelson - Parkside

Coming off being named the week 8 GLIAC North Player of the Week, Alyssa Nelson has continued her strong run of play. The Rangers went 2-0 on the week and their winning streak now sits at 7 after victories over Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan. In Parkside's contest against Michigan Tech, Nelson went for 19 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field and 3-of-6 from beyond the arc. Against Northern Michigan, she scored 22 points, including a buzzer beating three at the end of regulation to give Parkside their sixth GLIAC win.

SOUTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jodi Johnson - Ashland

Two strong performances, including in a win which gave her team sole possession of first place in the conference standings, has led to Ashland University senior guard Jodi Johnson earning her 16th career Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference South Division Player of the Week award. As announced by the GLIAC on Monday (Jan. 13) afternoon, Johnson is the South Division Player of the Week for the third time in 2019-20, and with good reason. In wins over No. 3-ranked Grand Valley State and Davenport last week at Kates Gymnasium, Johnson was 17-for-28 (60.7 percent) from the field, 3-for-7 from 3-point range and 8-of-9 from the free-throw line, and racked up 45 points, nine rebounds, six assists and five steals. In the 77-68 victory over the Lakers, Johnson compiled 21 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals while playing all 40 minutes.
