FSU’s DeBoer Named “Freshman of the Year,” GVSU’s Mailloux Tabbed “Coach of the Year”

BAY CITY, Mich. -- Ashland University senior Anne Miles (Dublin, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) has earned the 2011 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Women's Golf "Athlete of the Year" award as announced by the conference office. Miles posted the lowest stroke average among the GLIAC’s women’s golfers this season. Ferris State University rookie Jacqueline DeBoer (Grand Rapids, Mich./South Christian) was named the conference's "Freshman of the Year" while Grand Valley State University head coach Rebecca Mailloux was tabbed as the GLIAC "Coach of the Year".

Miles, a senior, is a two-time first team All-GLIAC selection and a two-time second team all-conference honoree. This spring, Miles was the medalist at the Northern Kentucky Invitational and was the runner-up at the California (PA) Vulcan Invitational, the Classic Club Invitational in Palm Desert, Calif., and the GLIAC Championship.  Miles is part of an AU team that is currently ranked second in the region.  A year ago, Miles finished 13th at the NCAA regional tournament. She had the highest finish of any Ashland golfer.

DeBoer earned GLIAC Freshman of the Year laurels after finishing tied for sixth overall at the 2011 GLIAC Championship this past weekend (April 22-23) in Ashland, Ohio.  DeBoer posted a team-best total of 246 (+30) in the three rounds.  A first-team All-GLIAC honoree, DeBoer has been the Bulldogs’ highest finisher in four tournaments this year, including a career-high third place performance at the Lake Superior State Invitational (Sept. 11-12).  Overall, she’s posted seven top-20 showings and is averaging a team-leading 80.53 stroke average in 19 rounds to date this campaign.

Mailloux was named the GLIAC “Coach of the Year” for the second consecutive season. She helped lead the Lakers to a comeback victory at the GLIAC Championship, as Grand Valley State overcame a 14-stroke deficit on day two of the conference tournament to capture its fourth straight league title. GVSU also took home the team title at the Classic Club Invitational in March and totaled four second-place team finishes throughout the year. Mailloux coached a pair of All-GLIAC First Team selections (Sarah Hoffman, Allie Tyler) and two All-GLIAC Second Team members (Ashley Beard, Veronica Ryan), winning the GLIAC “Coach of the Year” award for the second time in her three seasons at Grand Valley State.

Joining Miles and DeBoer on the 2011 All-GLIAC First Team are: senior Allie Tyler and junior Sarah Hoffman of Grand Valley State; and junior Erin Misheff and sophomore Holly James of Ashland.

The 2011 All-GLIAC Second Team includes: sophomore Ashley Beard and freshman Veronica Ryan of Grand Valley State; senior Andrea Vogt, junior Ashley Gubser, and freshman Brooke Albers of the University of Findlay; and freshman Emily Rhody of Ferris State University.
