GVSU’s Hartigan Named “Freshman of the Year,” GVSU’s Mailloux Tabbed “Coach of the Year”

BAY CITY, Mich. -- Grand Valley State University senior Sarah Hoffman (Saline, Mich.) has earned the 2012 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Women's Golf "Athlete of the Year" award as announced by the conference office. Hoffman posted the lowest stroke average among the GLIAC’s women’s golfers this season. GVSU rookie Kelly Hartigan (Lake Orion, Mich.) was named the conference's "Freshman of the Year" while Grand Valley State head coach Rebecca Mailloux was tabbed as the GLIAC "Coach of the Year".

Hoffman, a senior, posted arguably the best individual season in GVSU history. Hoffman was the medalist at the GLIAC Championship after shooting a three-round 215 (+15) that included the two best rounds of the tournament, a first round 72 (+2) and a third round 73 (+3). On the year, Hoffman won five tournaments, tying the single-season record at GVSU, finished in the top five eight times and in the top 10 in all 10 tournaments she competed in. Hoffman’s scoring average this season (74.4) is the lowest single-season scoring average in team history and she set a school record with eight rounds par or better this year. Hoffman finished in the top five of all four GLIAC Championships she competed in and is a four-time All-GLIAC honoree.

Hartigan earned GLIAC “Freshman of the Year” laurels after carding a three round 246 (+36) including a low round of 76 (+6) to finish eighth at the GLIAC Championship. Hartigan carries a 78.9 scoring average this season, claiming three top five finishes and five top 10 finishes on the season. Hartigan finished second at the Bulldog Invitational with a two-round score of 146 (+2) and carded a 151 (+7) at the Michael Corbett Fall Classic to finish in third. Hartigan recorded one eagle and 30 birdies this year, earning her First Team All-GLIAC honors.

Mailloux was named the GLIAC “Coach of the Year” for the third straight season after leading the Lakers to their fifth straight GLIAC Championship. Mailloux coached five All-GLIAC honorees this year including three first-team members along with the Player of the Year (Sarah Hoffman) and Freshman of the Year (Kelly Hartigan). Mailloux’s team this season has won seven tournaments, the second-highest total in a single season at GVSU. At the Bulldog Invitational, the Lakers carded a team round of 292, the lowest team round in GVSU history and part of the lowest 36-hole team score in school history as well (588).
