The Lakers posted a first-round total of 323 (+35) in rainy, cold and windy conditions on Friday morning. The University of Findlay currently sits in second place after shooting a total of 332 (+44), four shots clear of Ferris State University, which posted a round of 336 (+48).  Northwood University and Ashland University are tied for fourth after each team posted rounds of 341 (+53).

All five GVSU golfers are inside the top 16, including junior Kelly Hartigan, the reigning GLIAC Championship medalist, who holds the individual lead.

Hartigan did not record a birdie all afternoon, but managed to rattle off five consecutive pars to begin the back nine after she battled to a four-over par 40 on the front side. A bogey on the par-4 15th ended the run. She parred the final three holes to get into the clubhouse with a five-over par 77.

Ohio Dominican University sophomore Jamie Ellison shot a first-round 78 and  is tied for second place with Findlay's Shelby Warner.  Ellison finished with nine pars and two birdies on her round to pace the Panthers, who as a team shot a 358 and sit in eighth place.  Warner managed to card a pair of birdies during her round, including a 3 on the tough par 4 No. 11, on her way to posting a two-over-par 38 on the back nine.

The second round of the 2014 GLIAC women's golf championship will begin at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, with the final round taking place on Sunday morning.
