BAY CITY, Mich. - Grand Valley State University junior Kelly Hartigan (Lake Orion, Mich.) has earned the 2014 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Women's Golf "Athlete of the Year" award as announced by the conference office. Hartigan posted the lowest stroke average among the GLIAC’s women’s golfers this season. Grand Valley State University rookie Julie Guckian (Linden, Mich.)  was named the conference's "Freshman of the Year" while Grand Valley State University head coach Rebecca Mallioux was tabbed as the GLIAC "Coach of the Year".

Grand Valley State University junior Kelly Hartigan, who set a new single-season school record with seven tournament wins and matched fellow Lakers Sarah Hoffman and Melissa Sneller with 11 career victories, earned one of 10 WGCA All-America First Team spots and was named GLIAC Women’s Golf “Athlete of the Year”.The Lake Orion, Mich. native is just the fourth golfer in program history to be a first-team All-American. This is also the second straight season Hartigan has been voted the GLIAC’s top performer. Former Laker Ashley Smith is the only other golfer in league history to win the award twice.

Aided by a second-place finish at the GLIAC Championship, Julie Guckian was tabbed as the league’s “Freshman of the Year”. She is the fifth Laker since 2004-05 to win the award.  Guckian posted one other top 10 this season at the JBMF Cavalier Classic and ended the campaign with an 81.10 scoring average. Additionally, Guckian was voted onto the All-GLIAC Second Team.

Rebecca Mailloux guided the Lakers to seven tournament victories — tied for the second-most in program history — this season, including their seventh consecutive GLIAC Championship and seventh East Super Regional title. GVSU made its 12th appearance at the NCAA Division II National Championship and turned in the ninth-best 54-hole score in school history with a 62-over par 926 at the Perry Park Spring Fling. Under her watch in 2013-14, Kelly Hartigan set a new single-season school record with seven wins, while Gabrielle Shipley tallied two victories. This is the fourth time Mailloux has claimed the ward and the first since winning it two straight seasons from 2010-12.

Joining Kelly Hartigan on the 2014 All-GLIAC First Team are: freshman Gabrielle Shipley and senior Veronica Ryan of Grand Valley State University; senior Ashley Swanson of Ferris State University, senior Brook Albers of the University of Findlay; and sophomore Ali Green of Ashland University.

Joining Julie Guckian on the 2014 All-GLIAC Second Team includes: sophomore Jamie Ellison of Ohio Dominican University, junior Madison Musick and freshman Kaitlin Neumann of Ashland University, junior Michele Schambs of the University of Findlay; and senior Jacquiline Mulder of Ferris State University.
