NASHPORT, Ohio -- The Findlay Oilers, led by sophomore Makenzie Torres, fired 308 (+20) on Day One of the 2017 GLIAC Women's Golf Championships at The Virtues Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio. Torres recorded six birdies, including a 2-under par back nine, en route to a 1-over par 73 to lead by one. 

Three shots behind the Oilers are the Northern Michigan Wildcats who put together a first round total of 311 (+23) in their second year as a program. Grand Valley State is positioned third at +32 (320), while Ashland currently sits fourth at +37 (325) with Saginaw Valley State in fifth at +44 (332) in the Cardinals' inaugural season.

Northern Michigan's Caro Els and Ferris State's Destiny Lawson carded identical 2-over par rounds of 74 to sit tied for second just one shot back of the leader. Els carded the lone eagle of the day in the women's tournament with a 3 on Hole No. 16 to go with four birdies. Findlay's Samantha Kellstrom sits alone in fourth after shooting 75 (+3). Shelby Warner (Findlay), Avery Rochester (Northern Michigan) and Shelbe Cahill (Saginaw Valley) are all locked up in a 3-way tie for fifth at 4-over par.

Action resumes with afternoon tee times on Saturday for the women. This year marks the first time the men's and women's championships have both been held at the same site.
