GVSU's Chipman Captures GLIAC Women's Golf Player of the Year Honors; All-Conference Teams Revealed

GLIAC — Grand Valley State sophomore Katie Chipman has been named 2018 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Women's Golf Player of the Year as announced by the conference office on Thursday (April 26). GVSU's Olivia Reed earned Freshman of the Year honors, while GVSU head coach Rebecca Mailloux captured Coach of the Year accolades after the Lakers captured their 13th GLIAC Women's Golf Championship over the weekend.


PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Katie Chipman - Grand Valley State

After guiding the Lakers to their ninth conference championship in the last 10 years and taking home the individual title, Grand Valley State's Katie Chipman has been named the GLIAC Player of the Year. Chipman is the first Laker to take home the award and win the conference tournament since Gabrielle Shipley completed the feat back in 2015. Chipman started out strong on the first two days of the competition but remained in second heading into the final day before surging ahead in the last round to win the title by just one stroke. Of the 11 tournaments Chipman played in, she finished inside the top-20 ten times, inside the top-10 nine times, and won an impressive five individual titles, including three straight to end the regular season. Chipman is also now a two-time All-GLIAC First Team honoree.

FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR: Olivia Reed - Grand Valley State

Grand Valley State's Olivia Reed has been named the GLIAC Freshman of the Year, joining nine other Lakers to have earned the honor in program history. In her first conference tournament, Reed shot rounds of 83, 78, and 79 for a three-day total of 240 and a 20th place finish. In her first collegiate season, Reed earned her first individual title at the SVSU Spring Invite en route to finishing inside the top-10 five times and the top-20 eight times in her 11 tournaments. Additionally, Reed earned a spot on the All-GLIAC Second Team.

COACH OF THE YEAR: Rebecca Mailloux - Grand Valley State

Grand Valley State's Rebecca Mailloux has been named the GLIAC Coach of the Year for the seventh time in her career. Mailloux helped guide the Lakers to their ninth conference championship in the past 10 years, while helping GVSU's Katie Chipman take home the individual title as well. Throughout the season, GVSU played in 11 tournaments and failed to finish below fifth place as a team and took home six titles. The Lakers finished first at the FSU Bulldog Fall Invite, the Gilda's Club Laker Fall Invite, the GLIAC vs. GMAC Showdown, the SVSU Spring Invite, and finished their season with two more first place finishes at the NC4K Classic and the Ashland Invitational before the GLIAC Championships.
