Lake Erie's Matt Vandermeer Named GLIAC Wrestling "Athlete of the Week"

BAY CITY, Mich. - Lake Erie College sophomore 165-pound All-American Matt Vandermeer was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Wrestling "Athlete of the Week" for his performance last week at the Lake Erie Quad.

Lake Erie College sophomore 165-pound All-American Matt Vandermeer posted a 3-0 record on Saturday, Feb. 9, at the Lake Erie Quad to earn Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Wrestler of the Week honors.

In his first match of the day, Vandermeer defeated last year's national runner-up, Mason True of Findlay, for the second time this season, earning a 4-2 decision.  He then went on to pick up a 3-0 win over King College's John Austin Jones and an 8-6 victory over Clint Schaefer in the Storm's upset win over 13th-ranked Mercyhurst. 

After placing sixth at last year's NCAA Division II Championships, Vandermeer has had a stellar sophomore season, going 28-6 on the season with victories in 17 of his last 18 matches heading into the NCAA Super Regional 2 tournament.
