BAY CITY, Mich. – The 2015 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Women's Soccer awards have been announced after voting conducted by the league's coaches.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Grand Valley State junior midfielder Marti Corby led the conference in goals (19), points (51), assists (13) and game winning goals (7). Corby also leads the nation in assists, is tied for third in total points and fifth in goals. Corby has been the primary scorer and distributor in the second most potent offense in the country at 4.47 goals scored per game, for a season total of 76 goals.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR
A veteran defender who polished her offensive game in the offseason, GVSU junior defender Clare Carlson's renewed presence on the attack has made her the highest scoring defender in the conference with five goals on the season to go along with four assists. She has been a core piece of a defensive back line that has allowed just 48 shots on goal this season and yielded only seven goals. Of those seven, just one was scored in a conference matchup, which tied a school record for fewest goals allowed in GLIAC play with the 2013 team.
FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR
Ashland's Deijah Swihart made an immediate impact for the Eagles on her way to earning GLIAC Freshman of the Year honors. Starting all 16 regular-season games, she had five goals, three assists and 13 points. Swihart also recorded a pair of game-winning overtime goals and two game-winning assists.
GOALKEEPER OF THE YEAR
Ferris State's Maddie Haustein set a school record with 13 victories in 2015 and also set an all-time mark with seven shutouts. She played 1,653 minutes during the regular season or all but eight minutes in net for the Bulldogs and compiled an impressive 0.82 goals against average. Haustein also made 144 saves with a .906 save percentage en route to a 13-4-1 overall record. Her performance helped the Bulldogs finish with their highest regular-season league performance in school history as FSU earned runner-up honors and clinched a home league tournament quarterfinal match for only the second time in school history.
COACH OF THE YEAR
Ferris State's Andy McCaslin led the Bulldogs to new heights in 2015 as the Bulldogs set a new school record with 13 regular-season victories and placed the highest in school history with a runner-up league regular season finish. FSU set a new school mark with nine league wins and posted a school all-time best 12-match unbeaten streak this year. Additionally, the Bulldogs broke a school record for most shutouts in a campaign (8) and most consecutive shutouts (4) while being ranked among the top six in the Midwest Region heading into the league tournament.
