Wayne State Swimming & Diving Lead GLIAC at NCAA Championships

BAY CITY, Mich. – A total of 12 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) swimming and diving teams represented the conference and their respected institutions at the 2015 Division II Swimming and Diving Championships.

Wayne State's men's squad finished fourth in the four-day event, while the Warrior women took fifth. Grand Valley State's men earned a sixth-place showing.

Day Four - Saturday

Northern Michigan's senior Deborah Lawrence finished fifth in the 100 freestyle with a time of 49.80. Junior Hannah Mattar from Ashland was fourth in 200 breaststroke after posting a time of 2:15.77. Wayne State's 400 meter relay team finished fourth to close out the national championships with a time of 3:23.67.

For the men, sophomore Till Barthel continued to have a strong showing, finishing fourth in the 100 free with a time of 43.80. Freshman Metin Aydin from GVSU placed third in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:44.26. Senior Piotr Jachowicz finished fourth in the 200 breaststroke, finishing with a time of 1:57.13.

Day Three - Friday

On the third day of the championships, Wayne State's junior Elly Maleski placed sixth in the 100 backstroke with a time of 54.43, while junior Jessica Ward from Findlay was eighth with a time of 55.22. In the 100 yard breaststroke, WSU's junior Hannah Loesch placed fifth with a time of 1:02.89. Senior Kristina Novichenko, also from Wayne State, finished sixth in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:01.86.

For the men, senior Piotr Jachowicz from Wayne State, scored 17 points for the Warriors after placing second in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 52.74. In the 200 butterfly, Grand Valley State's junior Gianni Ferrero finished third with a time of 1:44.52, while freshman from Findlay Janko Radmanovic was seventh (1:48.04), and Wayne State's sophomore Soren Holm was eighth (1:51.02). In the one meter dive, GVSU sophomore Tyler Keelean placed second with 558.55 points and Wayne State's senior Dylan Szegedi was third with 547.50 points.

Day Two - Thursday

Wayne State's women's 200 free relay team of senior Kei Cze Prentis, juniors Elly Maleski and Hannah Loesch, and freshman Makayla Myers continued their strong showing for the Warriors, placing seventh with a time of 1:33.79. Ashland's junior Hannah Mattar continued her success at the Championships with a fifth place finish in the 400 Individual Medley with a time of 4:19.47. Northern Michigan's senior Deborah Lawrence placed eighth in the 100 butterfly with a time of 55.69. In the one meter dive, Wayne State sophomore Elizabeth Rawlings placed second with 499.40 points and Grand Valley State's Taylor Wiercinski was fourth with 488.40 points. The Warriors also took seventh in the 400 Medley Relay. The team of junior Elly Maleski, junior Hannah Loesch, senior Gloria Martinez Perez, and Prentis finished with a time of 3:45.96.

The Warrior men added another title, claiming the 200 yard freestyle relay title. Sophomore Till Barthel, senior Piotr Jachowicz, sophomore Soren Holm, and sophomore Joshua Schacht swam to a first place finish with a time of 1:18.89, breaking the previous NCAA Division II record of 1:19.00 set by Drury in 2014. Grand Valley State's senior Sven Kardol was eighth in the 400 IM with a time of 3:58.81. In the 100 butterfly, GVSU's junior Gianni Ferrero and Wayne State's Soren Holm was second and third with times of 46.54 and 46.69 respectively. The Warriors took second in the 400 Medley Relay with the team of junior Juan David Molina Perez, Jachowicz, Holm, and Barthell with a time of 3:09.81.

Day One - Wednesday

16 GLIAC swimmers earned All-American status after placing in the top-8 in their respective events. On the women's side, Grand Valley State freshman Samantha Postmus earned her All-American status after placing eighth in the 1000 free with a time of 10:06.03. Ashland junior Hannah Mattar joined her after placing sixth in the 200 Individual Medley with a time of 2:01.95. Deborah Lawrence from Northern Michigan was the next, finishing third in the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.79. For the men, GVSU's junior Gianni Ferrero (1:45.90) and freshman Metin Aydin (1:46.89) were second and fourth in the 200 Individual Medley.

Wayne State's senior Dylan Szegedi took home the national title in the three meter dive, totaling 587.65 points. GVSU's sophomore Tyler Keelan and freshman Ian Ellis came in second and sixth, respectively. The 200 medley relay team from Wayne State, comprised of junior Juan David Molina Perez, senior Piotr Jachowicz, sophomores Soren Holm, and Joshua Schacht came in first with a time of 1:26.17 to give the Warriors their second national crown of the day. The team from Grand Valley State of Aydin, senior Milan Medo, freshman Gabriel Souza, and junior Wagner was eighth with a time of 1:29.00.
