BAY CITY, Mich. - Wayne State junior Andreea Mitrache has been selected Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Women's Tennis Player of the Year by league coaches after an flawless league record at No. 1 singles. Hillsdale's Halle Hyman was named Freshman of the Year, while Grand Valley State's John Black was voted Coach of the Year.
Wayne State's Andreea Mitrache went undefeated at first singles with a record of 10-0 and posted a 9-0 mark at the second doubles flight in conference play. The junior was an All-GLIAC First Team selection last season and has a 46-10 career singles record along with a 40-16 career doubles record. She is the third Warriors in the last six years to be voted GLIAC Athlete of the Year joining Sharon Gill (2010) and Kristina Goranskaya (2011).
Hillsdale's Halle Hyman, a native of Rochester, Michigan, immediately took over as the Chargers' No. 1 singles player upon her arrival, and was successful even against the stiff competition of the GLIAC. She went 7-3 as the No. 1 singles player for Hillsdale in conference play and was 7-4 as a doubles player on the season. Hyman's play was a key reason for Hillsdale's four-game improvement in the standings in 2015.
Grand Valley State's John Black has been the head coach of the Grand Valley State women's tennis team for 13 years and compiled a record of 300-97 in his long career in Allendale. Black has led the Lakers to a share of their first GLIAC regular season title since 2010 as he guided his team comprised entirely of freshmen and sophomores to a 10-1 regular season conference mark. Since becoming head coach in 2002, Black has led the Laker women to 13 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances.
