Lake State's Drouin Named Player of the Year; 2017 GLIAC Women's Tennis Awards Announced

BAY CITY, Mich. - Lake Superior State freshman AlexiAnn Drouin has been selected 2017 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Women's Tennis Player of the Year by league coaches. Michigan Tech's Ivona Gorgioski was named Freshman of the Year, while Grand Valley State's John Black was voted Coach of the Year.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Lake Superior State freshman AlexiAnn Drouin started the year for the Lakers at the No. 1 singles spot and went on to accumulate an 11-1 mark (9-1 GLIAC) in singles.  With partner Allison Grandfield, Drouin compiled a 5-7 record at No. 2 doubles (3-7 GLIAC).  Drouin's performance helped Lake Superior win 5 more games, despite one less conference match.  A biochemistry major, Drouin hails from St. Georges, Quebec.  She is the first player from Lake Superior to ever receive GLIAC Player of the Year accolades.

FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR: Michigan Tech's Ivona Gorgioski anchored the Huskies' lineup in No. 1 and No. 2 singles throughout the season. Gorgioski enters the GLIAC Tournament with an overall record of 9-2 in singles competition and owns a mark of 6-6 in doubles contests.  Her GLIAC record is 7-2 with two non-conference wins added in for the total of nine in the win column.  In doubles play, Gorgioski paired up with junior Vicky Quinde during the 2017 fall season to post a 5-5 record in league contests.

COACH OF THE YEAR: Grand Valley State's John Black, who is in his 16th season at the helm of the Grand Valley State women's tennis program, led the Lakers to a 10-0 GLIAC record and the 2017 GLIAC regular season team title. Since becoming the head coach in 2002, the Lakers have compiled a 343-112 record under Black's guidance and tallied three GLIAC regular season titles and one tournament crown. In addition, Black had guided the Lakers to 15 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances.
