2017 All-GLIAC Volleyball Awards Unveiled

The 2017 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Volleyball postseason awards have been announced after voting conducted by the league's coaches. 

PLAYER & ATTACKER OF THE YEAR
Allyson Cappel - Ferris State

Ferris State University sophomore hitter Allyson Cappel led the nationally-ranked Bulldogs to their fourth consecutive GLIAC Regular-Season Championship this season under head coach Tia Brandel-Wilhelm. The two-time All-GLIAC honoree has compiled a team-leading 338 kills to date this year along with 262 digs in leading FSU to a 21-7 overall record and the number one seed for the conference tournament. Cappel has averaged 3.84 kills and 2.98 digs per set while recording a .235 attack figure in 25 matches for the Bulldogs. In addition, she's added 17 aces and 29 total blocks while playing a versatile role in the FSU attack.

BLOCKER OF THE YEAR
Kayla Chosa - Northern Michigan

Northern Michigan senior Kayla Chosa finished the 2017 season with 135 total blocks, 103 block assists and led the league with 32 solo blocks.  She led the GLIAC for a majority of the year and finished second with 1.30 blocks per set.  Chosa also helped guide the Wildcats to the nation's top spot for blocks per set and second for total blocks.  For her career, Chosa is second in NMU history with current totals of 111 solo blocks, 337 block assists and 438 total blocks.

FRESHMAN & SETTER OF THE YEAR
Laura DeMarchi - Michigan Tech

Michigan Tech freshman Laura DeMarchi was the ignition to the Huskies offense this season. To begin her college volleyball career, DeMarchi started 26 of the Huskies season matches, compiling 1,100 assists. The setter averaged 11.96 assists per set overall, and 12.45 in the GLIAC, making her the top ranked setter all season. Currently she is No. 1 in the conference in service aces per set at 0.38. The Milan, Italy native has 282 digs under her belt, 28 blocks and 63 kills at an impressive attack percentage of .361. DeMarchi has posted more than 40 assists in 15 matches and has tallied 19 double-doubles to help Tech to an 18-9 regular season mark and a 12-4 GLIAC record.

LIBERO OF THE YEAR
Taylor Lattimore - Tiffin

Tiffin University senior defensive specialist Taylor Lattimore has had a stellar career, posting 2,417 career digs, currently third in the GLIAC record book and second in the Tiffin University career record book. Lattimore can take sole possession of second place in the GLIAC with 18 more digs. Taylor leads the GLIAC in digs this season with 601. Nationally, she is 22nd in total digs. Taylor sits second in the conference in digs per set (5.05), and for her career is averaging 5.47 digs per set. This is the second consecutive year that Lattimore has been named Libero of the Year, and her third such GLIAC honor.

COACH OF THE YEAR
Matt Jennings - Michigan Tech

Jennings, in his sixth season at Michigan Tech, is the third Tech volleyball coach to earn the honor after leading the Huskies to a tie for second place in the GLIAC standings this season and their third straight GLIAC Tournament appearance. Tech finished 18-9 in the regular season and won nine of its final 10 conference matches. Tech leads the GLIAC in kills per set, hitting percentage, and assists per set, and is second in the league in service aces per set, digs per set, and points per set. Jennings has won 87 matches leading the Huskies, including 53 over the last three seasons. Tech's Mary Kaminski was named GLIAC Coach of the Year in 1993 and 1994.
