Ferris, Northern, Tech & Wayne Advance to GLIAC Tournament Semifinals; Bulldogs Host

2017 GLIAC VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT CENTRAL

GLIAC -- Four teams earned 2017 GLIAC Volleyball Tournament Quarterfinal victories on Wednesday (Nov. 15) night and are headed to Ferris State for weekend action at the conference tournament.

No. 1 Ferris State will host No. 5 Wayne State in the opening semifinal match this Saturday in Big Rapids at 3 PM before No. 2 Northern Michigan and No. 3 Michigan Tech take the court for a 5:30 PM start in the second semifinal. The 2017 All-GLIAC Volleyball Awards presenation will take place between the two matches.

No. 1 Ferris State def. No. 8 Ashland, 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-20) | BOX SCORE

The top-seeded Bulldogs started off hot hitting .417 in the first set on their way to sweeping Ashland and giving Ferris State homecourt advantage throughout the upcoming weekend at the GLIAC Volleyball Tournament. FSU hit .361 for the match with Allyson Cappel, Courtney Brewer and Ayann Buckley all notching double-digit kills on the night. Setter Maeve Grimes posted 42 assists in the win, while Lauren Reminga compiled 18 digs.

No. 2 Northern Michigan def. No. 7 Davenport, 3-1 (25-15, 25-13, 23-25, 25-19) | BOX SCORE

Northern Michigan registered 17 kills to just three errors on 31 attacks in the opening frame to set the tone in a 3-1 win of Davenport on Wednesday night as the Wildcats look forward to a meeting in the semifinals with their rivals Michigan Tech. NMU hit .452 in the first frame and .371 in the second before slowing up a bit and winning the match in four sets. Sarah Kuehn, Kayla Chosa, Leticia Antunes and Madison Whitehead all reached double-figures in kills with Antunes also recording 20 digs on the night. NMU setter Jami Hogeboom added 51 assists as the Wildcats hit .259 for the match. Davenport was paced by 14 kills from Ashley VanderHorst and 10 kills from Krissy Dill.

No. 3 Michigan Tech def. No. 6 Tiffin, 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-16) | BOX SCORE

Michigan Tech recorded a 3-set sweep of Tiffin behind offensive fire power of Tech's Lauren Emmert (13 kills), Olivia Ghormley (11 kills), MacAulay Petersen (10 kills) and Mariah Sherman (8 kills), while freshman setter Laura DeMarchi recorded 41 assists and 10 digs in the victory. The Huskies amassed a .222 hitting percentage as the Dragons posted a .140 clip.

No. 5 Wayne State def. No. 4 Grand Valley State, 3-2 (22-25, 25-23, 22-25, 28-26, 15-9) | BOX SCORE

Facing a 20-15 deficit in the fourth set, the Wayne State Warriors fought back to take the fourth set and hit .400 in the decisive fifth set to eliminate the Lakers on the road by a 15-9 margin in the final frame. It was the third meeting this year between the two teams with all three going five sets and the winner being the road team. Wayne State's Hailey Richardson recorded a double-double with 24 kills and 21 digs as she hit .328 on the night, while Julia Malewicz posted 12 kills. Natalie Breault set up the Warrior offense with 56 assists and 11 digs, while Ellie Rodriguez posted 19 digs of her own. GVSU was paced by Hannah Murdock's 11 kills and 13 digs.
