Ferris State Captures Fifth-Straight GLIAC Regular Season Championship

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Ferris State University women's volleyball squad captured a fifth consecutive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Regular-Season Championship on Friday (Nov. 2) night as the Bulldogs beat Michigan Tech in a 3-0 sweep at the Ewigleben Sports Arena.

The Bulldogs, ranked eighth in the nation, topped the 24th-ranked Huskies in a first-place league showdown to improve to 22-4 on the year and a perfect 15-0 in the GLIAC. MTU fell to 21-5 overall and 13-2 in the GLIAC.

Ferris State won set one 25-21 before scoring a big 25-12 decision in the second along with a 25-17 triumph in the third to earn the win.

Junior outside hitter Allyson Cappel had a huge night for the Bulldogs with a match-high 17 kills to go with 16 digs. FSU also got nine kills from sophomore Katie O'Connell, who added 15 digs. Junior Courtney Brewerchipped in with eight kills in the triumph.

Ferris State hit .245 overall and compiled 46 kills with only 12 attack errors on 139 attempts. FSU also had 80 digs to go with six block assists and three aces.

The Bulldogs received a match-high 20 digs from senior libero Katie Placek and 17 from fellow senior Kayla Rosman. Junior setter Maeve Grimes added 36 assists and seven digs.

FSU held Michigan Tech to a .062 attack figure and the Huskies finished with 30 kills in addition to 69 digs, eight block assists and a single ace. Michigan Tech was led by Olivia Ghormley with nine kills and Grave Novotny, who had a team-high 18 digs.

Ferris State, which also earned the #1 seed for the GLIAC Tournament by virute of the win, will close out the regular-season by hosting Northern Michigan on Saturday (Nov. 3) at 5 p.m. (ET) for its Senior Day match at the Ewigleben Sports Arena.
