Ferris State's Cappel, Davenport's VanderHorst Honored GLIAC Volleyball Players of the Week

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced weekly awards following the 11th and final weekend of the 2018 volleyball regular season. Ferris State University junior outside hitter Allyson Cappel earned GLIAC Volleyball North Division honors for the second time this season, while Davenport senior middle blocker Ashley VanderHorst captured South Division accolades.


NORTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Allyson Cappel - Ferris State

Ferris State University junior outside hitter Allyson Cappel had a big weekend for the eighth-ranked Bulldogs as FSU secured a fifth-straight GLIAC Regular Season Championship by sweeping second-place Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan by identical 3-0 scores. Cappel averaged 5.00 kills and 4.67 digs per set in the two wins, including 17 kills and 16 digs in the win over MTU on Friday night along with 13 kills and 12 digs against NMU on Saturday. She hit .247 for the weekend and also had an ace and a block as FSU finished league play unbeaten at 16-0 this year and improved to 24-3 on the season.


SOUTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Ashley VanderHorst - Davenport

Davenport senior middle blocker Ashley VanderHorst ended the regular season with a bang as she led the Panthers to road wins at Purdue Northwest and Parkside. She hit .525 for the weekend with 33 kills, five service aces, five digs and 14 total blocks. In Saturday's five-set win at Parkside, VanderHorst had 19 kills (second most this season) and nine blocks.
