FSU's Cappel, DU's Herr Claim GLIAC Volleyball Players of the Week

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced weekly awards following week five of the 2019 volleyball season. Feris State Senior Allyson Cappel earned GLIAC Volleyball North Player of the week honors, while Davenport middle blocker Megan Herr was awarded GLIAC Volleyball South Division Player of the Week accolades.

NORTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Allyson Cappel, Ferris State

Senior All-American Allyson Cappel led the 16th-ranked Bulldogs to a perfect weekend as FSU topped Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech by identical 3-0 scores in Big Rapids. Cappel produced a team-high 26 kills along with 21 digs, five blocks and four aces in the two contests for 33.5 total points or an average of 5.6 points per set. She also hit an impressive .532 for the weekend, including a .625 figure in Friday's 3-0 win over NMU when she had 10 kills, eight digs, two blocks and an ace. Cappel came back on Saturday to notch a match-high 16 kills with 13 digs, three blocks and three aces while playing a leading role in FSU's 3-0 win over the Huskies in a first-place showdown in the GLIAC North. The senior standout helped the Bulldogs stretch their win streak to five in a row and all five have come in straight-sets.

SOUTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Megan Herr, Davenport

After a week in which Davenport went 2-0 and Megan Herr hit a blistering .545, Herr became the Panthers first GLIAC South Player of the Week for 2019 as announced by the league on Monday afternoon. In those two wins, the sophomore middle blocker sent home 21 kills to just three errors on 33 total attacks. Herr racked up 10 kills and a .562 hitting percentage at Parkside before 11 more kills and a .529 clip at Purdue Northwest. She also totaled nine blocks, four solo and five assisted, and is tied for third in the GLIAC in solo blocks this season with nine. For the first time in her career, Herr registered at least 10 kills in back-to-back matches. The Camden, Ind. native has notched 10 or more kills in five matches this season including four of her last six. She had only hit .500 or better in a match twice before this past week, but never in consecutive matches. Herr and company are back home this week to face Northwood on Friday at 7 p.m. and Ferris State on Saturday at 2 p.m.
