Grand Valley State Claims 2010 GLIAC Men's & Women's Cross Country Championships

HILLSDALE, Mich. - The Grand Valley State University men's & women's cross country teams placed first at the 2010 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships meet on Saturday morning (Nov. 6) hosted by Hillsdale College.

The No. 2 ranked Laker women recorded a team score of 18 points, outdistancing second place Ferris State Universityh by 65 points. Wayne State University placed third with 97, followed by Hillsdale in fourth (107) and Ashland University in fifth (111).

GVSU had seven runners finish in the top-10 and six finish in the top-seven with a pace time of 21:31. Senior Megan Maceratini led the way for Grand Valley State with claiming the individual title. Her first place time of 21:19.8 earned her GLIAC Women's "Runner of the Year." Senior Katherine McCarthy followed in second with a time of 21:26.2, while Jessie Vickers placed third (21:33.8).

GLIAC Women's Cross Country Freshman of the Year accolades went to Michigan Technological University's Deedra Irwin, who placed 23rd with a time of 22:50.8.

The GVSU men's team, ranked fifth nationally, claimed 10 of the top 13 places en route to team score of 15 points. Ashland placed second with 98 points, while Wayne State was third with 105 points.  Tiffin University placed fourth with 106 points, followed by Hillsdale in fifth with 124 points.

The Lakers, who claimed their ninth-straight GLIAC crown,  were led by junior Anthony Witt, who garnered the "Runner of the Year" award by finishing first, managing the the eight kilometer course in a time of 24:47.4.  Teammates juinor Tyler Emmorey, junior Ryan Toth, and junior Paul Zielinski, finished second, third, and fourth, respectively.

GLIAC Men's Cross Country Freshman of the Year accolades went to GVSU's Larry Julson, who placed fifth with a time of 25:03.7.

GVSU head men's and women's cross country coach, Jerry Baltes, earned "Coach of the Year" awards for both sports.
