Michigan Tech's De Marchi, Ashland's Bassitt Named 2020-21 GLIAC Scholar-Athletes of the Year

GLIAC -- Michigan Tech's Laura De Marchi and Ashland's Trevor Bassitt have been selected as recipients of the 2020-21 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards. The winners, awarded annually to one male and one female, were chosen from the 18 male and female GLIAC Commissioner's Award honorees throughout the 2020-21 academic year showcasing the top student-athletes both on the field and in the classroom.


Laura De Marchi | Volleyball | Michigan Tech University

De Marchi holds a 3.83 grade-point average in biomedical engineering while also pursuing a degree in electrical engineering with her extra year of eligibility. She was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America first team and earned her second straight GLIAC Commissioner’s Award this spring. DeMarchi was also named the 2021 GLIAC Volleyball Player of the Year, the GLIAC Setter of the Year for the fourth straight season, and to the All-GLIAC First Team for the fourth year in a row. She led NCAA Division II setters with 12.72 assists per set.

De Marchi, a native of Milan, Italy, set the school record for career assists on April 2 and currently has 4,313 assists. Additionally, she holds the school records for career assists per set (11.8) and season assists per set (12.72). De Marchi also reached 1,000 career digs in 2021. She ranks second amongst active NCAA Division II setters and third amongst all NCAA setters in career assists per set. She had 11 double-doubles and hit the 50-assist mark eight times in 2021 with a season-high 65 assists on March 27.

De Marchi and the Huskies captured a GLIAC Regular Season Title for the second time in program history in 2021 and were ranked in the top 25 for the majority of the spring season. They appeared in the GLIAC Tournament Championship for the third time in the last four seasons where De Marchi was named to the all-tournament team.

 


 

Trevor Bassitt | Track & Field | Ashland University

Trevor Bassitt is the 2020-21 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year. It is just the latest of a long line of honors for Bassitt during his first senior year.

Bassitt was most recently named College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) NCAA Division II Men's Track & Field/Cross Country Academic All-America Team Member of the Year and first-team Academic All-America. In 2020-21, he also was named U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) NCAA Division II Men's Indoor Track & Field National Scholar Track Athlete of the Year, earned a GLIAC Commissioner's Award and was CoSIDA Academic All-District.

Here is how Bassitt’s 2020-21 seasons broke down, indoors and outdoors:

* INDOOR SEASON: Three national championships en route to a team national title, USTFCCCA NCAA Division II Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Year, new D-II records in the men's 200 and 400 dashes, USTFCCCA Midwest Region Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Year, four GLIAC titles, three USTFCCCA D-II Men’s National Athlete of the Week awards, three GLIAC Men’s Track Athlete of the Week awards, and GLIAC Track Athlete of the Year, Track Athlete of the Meet and High Point Athlete of the Meet.
* OUTDOOR SEASON: One national title, USTFCCCA Midwest Region Men's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year, four GLIAC championships, four GLIAC Men’s Track Athlete of the Week awards, and GLIAC Track Athlete of the Year, Track Athlete of the Meet and High Point Athlete of the Meet.
