GLIAC Fall 2021 Commissioner's Award Recipients Announced

GLIAC – The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced the recipients of the Fall 2021 GLIAC Commissioner’s Awards. The awards are presented after the fall, winter and spring athletic seasons to six female and six male student-athletes that excel both in the classroom and in competition. All grade-point averages are based on a 4.0 scale.

The six female student-athletes recipients are:

• Katie O'Connell, Ferris State
• Bri Rogers, Ferris State
• Cecilia Steinwascher, Grand Valley State
• Grace VerHage, Ferris State

The six male student-athletes recipients are: 
• Zane Aldrich, Northwood
• Alexandre Durand, Parkside
• Isaac Harding, Grand Valley State
• Hayden Huttula, Michigan Tech
• Olalere Oladipo, Ferris State
• CarLee Stimpfel, Saginaw Valley State


Hannah Becker • Grand Valley State • Cross Country • Senior • Eau Claire, Wis. • 3.968 GPA •  Physical Education Teaching, Education

 

Hannah Becker crossed the line first at the 2021 NCAA DII Cross Country National  Championships taking home the individual crown with a 6k personal-best time of 20:22.0. She placed third at the NCAA DII Midwest Region Championships (20:47.6) and helped contribute to the team's first-place finish. At the GLIAC Championships, Becker led her team to the first perfect conference score since 1994, crossing the line first with a time of 22:04.4. She led division II at the MSU Spartan Invitational finishing seventh over with a time of 22:06.5. Becker earned NCAA and USTFCCCA All-American, All-Region, and First Team All-GLIAC honors, and was named USTFCCCA National Women's Athlete of the Year. Academically, Becker was just as successful in the classroom as she was  out on the course finishing the Fall Semester with a 3.940 GPA.  Becker earned GLIAC All-Academic Excellence and USTFCCCA All-Academic honors and was named the USTFCCCA National Scholar Athlete of the Year. 

 


 Laura De Marchi • Michigan Tech • Volleyball • Senior • Milan, Italy • 3.75 GPA •  Biomedical Engineering & Electrical Engineering

 

Michigan Tech setter Laura De Marchi received the GLIAC Commissioner's Award for the third straight year. She was named an AVCA First Team All-American, CoSIDA Academic All-American, AVCA Midwest Region Player of the Year, GLIAC Setter of the Year, and All-GLIAC First Team. The fifth-year senior from Milan, Italy, led the GLIAC and was seventh in NCAA Division II with 11.39 assists per set. She broke the school and GLIAC record for career assists (5,532). She also holds the school record for career assists per set (11.75) and ranks seventh in program history in career digs (1,390). De Marchi helped lead the Huskies to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight time and an NCAA win for the second straight tournament. The Huskies also captured the GLIAC regular-season title for the third time in school history. She holds a 3.75 grade-point average in biomedical engineering and electrical engineering.

 


 Katie O'Connell • Ferris State • Volleyball • Senior • Evergreen Park, Ill. • 3.90 GPA •  Master of Science - Nursing

 

Ferris State University senior hitter Katie O’Connell earned AVCA All-America First Team accolades in 2021, becoming an All-America choice for the third time in her collegiate career. O’Connell led FSU to an impressive 27-5 overall record and a spot in the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Championship match in her final campaign. The Bulldogs also won the GLIAC Tournament in a memorable postseason run that included FSU serving as the top seed and host for the Midwest Regional. O'Connell concluded her career as one of the top players in school history and paced FSU with 400 kills and 404 digs in 33 matches this fall, averaging 3.57 kills and 3.61 digs per set with 32 service aces and 66 total blocks. She also garnered both All-GLIAC First Team kudos and AVCA All-Midwest Region Team honors.

 

 

 

 

 

 


 Bri Rogers • Ferris State • Soccer • Senior • Livonia, Mich. • 3.82 GPA •  Biology/Pre-Pharmacy

 

Ferris State University senior standout Bri Rogers became only the second All-America choice in Bulldog Soccer history this past fall after leading FSU to the school’s first GLIAC Tournament Championship and second-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. An All-GLIAC First Team choice and all-region honoree, Rogers concluded the fall 2021 campaign with 10 goals and two assists for 22 points in 22 outings, ranking among the squad’s scoring leaders from the defensive side. She also had a pair of game-winning goals and totaled 51 shots while leading FSU to a 15-3-4 overall record. The Bulldogs stopped rival Grand Valley State’s 14-year conference tournament title streak with Rogers leading the way as a team captain.

 

 

 

 

 

 


 Cecilia Steinwascher • Grand Valley State • Soccer • Senior • Sterling Heights, Mich. • 3.74 GPA •  Physical Education

 

Graduating senior, Cecilia Steinwascher, of Grand Valley State women’s soccer has earned a 2021 Fall GLIAC Commissioner’s Award. The United Soccer Coaches National Player of the Year, she was a unanimous first team All-American and All-Region selection, CoSIDA Academic All-America first team, GLIAC Defensive Player of the Year for a league-record third time, first team All-conference and has been recognized as the Honda Award finalist for soccer. She scored eight goals and dished 10 assists despite a primarily defensive role and was the only Laker to start all 27 games to lead the team to a GLIAC regular season championship, Midwest regional title and DII-record seventh National Title, including a second straight. For her star-studded career, she was; a four-time unanimous All-American, including three years as unanimous first team selection, the 2019 United Soccer Coaches Scholar Athlete of the Year, a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American, four-time first team All-GLIAC selection, four-time GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team member, two-time National Champion, four-time GLIAC Tournament champion, four-time GLIAC Regular Season Champion and she finishes her career with the most games played and started in GVSU history.

 

 

 

 


Grace VerHage • Ferris State • Soccer • Senior • Otsego, Mich. • 3.98 GPA • Finance

 

Ferris State University senior forward Grace VerHage played a lead role for the Bulldogs as they won the GLIAC Tournament for the first time in school history this past fall and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second time ever. VerHage tallied a team-high 35 points on a squad-best 13 goals and nine assists in 22 contests for the Bulldogs. She also had a team-leading 96 shots with 51 on goal and recorded three game-winners for FSU. VerHage was both an All-GLIAC honoree and all-region pick while earned COSIDA Academic All-America Second Team accolades for FSU, which stopped rival Grand Valley State’s 14-year conference tournament title streak this past season en route to a 15-3-4 overall record.

 

 

 

 

 

 


 Zane Aldrich • Northwood • Cross Country • Junior • Hale, Mich. • 3.85 GPA •  Master of Science in Business Analytics

 

Junior Zane Aldrich turned in a historic season for the Northwood University men's cross country program, becoming the third runner in program history to qualify for the NCAA Championships. He set a school record with his performance at the Midwest Regional Championships, placing third overall with a time of 30:09 in the 10K event. Aldrich also earned First Team All-GLIAC honors with his eighth-place finish at the conference championships. The top finisher for Northwood in every event in the fall, Aldrich holds three school records in cross country as well as track & field. After graduating from Northwood in three years with a 3.942 GPA, Aldrich currently sports a 3.85 GPA in graduate school.

 

 

 

 

 

 


 Alexandre Durand • Parkside • Soccer • Junior • Paris, France • 3.735 GPA • Business Management & Marketing

 

Alexandre Durand was named the GLIAC Goalkeeper of the Year after helping lead the Parkside men's soccer team to their second GLIAC title and NCAA tournament appearance in the last three seasons.  Durand, a native of Paris, France, ended the season second in the GLIAC with 63 saves and a .716 save percentage, which was the fourth highest in the GLIAC. He allowed only 25 goals in 19 appearances. He also led the GLIAC in shutouts with 6. Durand was also named First Team All-GLIAC, United Soccer Coaches Midwest Region First Team, and United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-America.

 

 

 

 

 

 


 Isaac Harding • Grand Valley State • Cross Country • Senior • Grand Rapids, Mich. • 3.606 GPA • Physical Therapy

 

Isaac Harding is the 2021 NCAA DII Individual Cross Country National Champion after crossing the finish line with a personal-best time of 29:58.3 (10k). Harding also led his team to win the Men's National Cross Country Championships. He placed first at the GLIAC Championships with a time of 24:35.7 (8k), and first at the Louisville Classic with a personal-best 8k time of 23:16.7. Harding finished third at the MSU Spartan Invitational with a time of 24:23.0 (8k) leading his team to a first-place finish. Harding earned NCAA and USTFCCCA All-American and First Team All-GLIAC honors, as well as being named the  USTFCCCA National Men's Athlete of the Year. He also received the National Men's Athlete of the Week honors for his first-place finish at the Louisville Classic. Academically, Harding made the dean's list earning a 3.6 GPA in the Fall semester and was awarded GLIAC All-Academic Excellence and USTFCCCA All-American honors. For all of his accomplishments on the course and in the classroom, he was named the USTFCCCA National Scholar Athlete of the Year. 

 

 

 

 

 

 


 Hayden Huttula • Michigan Tech • Football • Junior • Hartland, Mich. • 3.77 GPA • Mechanical Engineering

 

Michigan Tech football captain and starting center Hayden Huttula was honored with the GLIAC Commissioner’s Award for the first time in his career. Huttula was named an AFCA First Team All-American, All-GLIAC Second Team, and Fall 2021 Dean’s List. The junior from Hartland, Michigan helped the Huskies to a 6-4 record (5-2 GLIAC) this season snapping the football to quarterback Will Ark, who was sacked 17 times and completed 51.8 percent of his passes for 1,715 yards. Huttula started all 10 games and helped the Huskies achieve 17.1 first downs per game. In 2019, he was recognized as All-GLIAC First Team and 2019 Don Hansen Third Team All-Super Region 3. He holds a 3.77 grade-point average in mechanical engineering.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


 Olalere Oladipo • Ferris State • Football • Junior • Huntley, Ill. • 3.74 GPA • Business Administration

 

Ferris State University defensive end Olalere Oladipo helped lead the Bulldogs to the program’s first-ever NCAA Division II National Championship this past fall, finishing with an unblemished 14-0 overall record under head coach Tony Annese. Oladipo played a lead role as one of FSU’s starting defensive ends and finished the year with 33 total tackles to go with 3.5 tackles for loss, two quarterback sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery in 14 games. The first-year Bulldog starter earned GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team recognition and was an All-GLIAC honoree on the field, helping FSU win the conference championship in unbeaten fashion for the third consecutive time. The Bulldogs also extended their regular-season winning streak to 38 consecutive games, which includes 31-straight conference victories.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


 CarLee Stimpfel • Saginaw Valley State • Cross Country • Senior • Cass City, Mich. • 3.799 GPA • Geography

 

CarLee Stimpfel led the SVSU men’s cross country team in 2021, highlighted by a third-place finish for the senior at the NCAA DII National Championships. Accomplishments for the 2021 season for the Cass City, Mich., native included NCAA DII All-American honor, the USTFCCCA National Runner of the Week award, USTFCCCA Midwest Region Cross Country Athlete of the Year, and NCAA DII Midwest Regional Champion. Stimpfel also won the Lewis University Crossover meet with a time of 23:55.1 in the 8k race. Other career accomplishments include 2018 and 2019 NCAA DII All-American honors. Stimpfel finished third at the 2018 USATF U20 Championships. Stimpfel is a geography major at SVSU.
